Elmira Falls in Non-League Bout to RIT
Score: Rochester Institute of Technology 9, Elmira College 0
Records: Elmira (4-4), RIT (1-1)
Location: Gordon Field House – Rochester, NY
Rochester, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team was hoping to extend its season-long win streak to four matches this afternoon, but the Soaring Eagles were unable to overcome a slow start as the Tigers of RIT claimed a 9-0 victory.
Winning two-of-three doubles points has been a key ingredient in Elmira's recipe for wins this season. RIT took that strategy and put it to good use, as the Tigers swept the doubles matches in convincing fashion, winning 24-of-28 games played.
RIT's 3-0 lead quickly turned into a 9-0 win, as the Tigers also swept the singles matches in straight sets; the Tigers won 72-of-84 games played. Elmira was unable to hang with RIT at the top half of its lineup, but matches at fourth and fifth singles proved to be more difficult for the Tigers.
After dropping the first set at love,
Patrick Tracey '18 staged a rally in the second. Unfortunately, Tracey's comeback bid would fall just short, as he dropped the second set by a single break at 6-4.
Fellow classmate
Chris Konow '18 also had a solid performance at the fifth spot. Konow had his opponent on the ropes in the first set, but was unable to pull it out down the stretch. He fell in the opening set 6-4, before dropping the second set at 6-2. Konow finished the day with the most games won of any Soaring Eagle with nine (three games won at second doubles).
Turning Point
Today's match was controlled by RIT from the opening serve, as the Tigers won all matches in straight sets. Elmira walked away from doubles action without a win, something that has occurred four times this season, all of which ended in EC defeats.
Match Recap
- RIT swept the doubles points and won all six singles matches in straight sets.
- EC's best showing in doubles came at the second spot, as Mansell and Konow teamed up for an 8-3 loss.
- Konow also had the best showing in singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at the fifth spot.
News and Notes
- Today's loss snaps a three-match win streak for EC.
