No. 23 Stevens Edges NYU
HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 13, 2016) – The No. 23 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team overcame a doubles deficit Wednesday in a 5-4 win over local rival New York University in Hoboken.
The win moved Stevens to 10-7, while NYU fell to 3-7.
Seniors
Matthew Heinrich and
Ben Foran delivered the Ducks the early lead with an 8-2 win at first doubles, but NYU responded with 8-3 and 8-6 wins at third and second respectively.
The win was the 10th of the season for the Stevens doubles aces, and the team-leading 12th individually for Foran.
Heinrich knotted the match at two with a 6-3, 6-3 win at first singles, but NYU responded with the 6-4, 6-2 win at sixth to re-take the lead. Junior
Michael Feldman delivered the answer for the Ducks with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth, however the Violets once again countered with a win at second.
Foran bounced-back from a second-set loss in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory at fourth though, before sophomore
Danny Polk delivered the match-clincher with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win at third.
The win was the fourth straight for Polk, and the second in as many matches where the Virginia native battled through three sets.
The Ducks will continue their homestand Saturday when they host No. 20 Christopher Newport University at noon in Hoboken.
