Fisher Wins E8 Title For Sixth Straight Year
The St. John Fisher College men's golf team won the Empire 8 Conference Championship for the sixth straight year on Sunday at the Hershey Golf Country Club in Pennsylvania. With the win, Fisher, who is hosting the NCAA Division III Championship in May at Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club, has earned an automatic bid to the national tournament.
The Cardinals shot a combined 307 in Sunday's final round to finish with a four-round total of 1222, defeating runner-up Moravian College, who closed out with a final score of 1260.
All-American senior Corey Haas shot a 78 on Sunday, finishing with a four-round total of 298 (76-74-70-78) to post an 11-shot victory over the field. Haas was named as the Empire 8 Conference's Player of the Year for the second straight year, marking the sixth consecutive year a Fisher athlete has earned the honor.
Stevens Institute of Techology's Jack Doherty was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. The freshman finished the tournament with a 312 (77-78-79-78) to finish in a tie for fouth place. Doherty's honor marks the first E8 rookie award for the Ducks.
Fisher's Karl Deuble and Moravian's Jim Maru finished tied for second overall with a 309. Deuble shot rounds of 80-73-75-81, while Maru shot 74-74-78-83.
Stevens junior Frank Szucs matched Doherty with a 312 (75-84-76-77) of his own.
Fisher's Christopher Salone finished in sixth place with a 313 (79-79-79-76), while Jeff Palmerino was in eighth place at 317 (78-82-80-77) tied with Susquehanna's Steven Jumper 317 (78-82-79-78).
Scranton's Eric Montella
shot a 2-over-par 73 for the lowest score of the day to finish in seventh place. Montella's 73 was his second straight on the weekend and was the lowest score of the day by three shots. His two-day total for the spring portion of the champions was 146, also the best of the tournament. He shot round of 85-83 in the fall for a four-round total of 314.
Moravian's Kevin Kunkle and Tyler Smith finished tied for ninth with a 320. Kunkle shot rounds of 79-84-75-82, while Smith shot a 77-87-80-76.
