Hartwick Beats SUNY Delhi 6-3
DELHI, NY - The Hartwick Hawks (2-5, 1-3) defeated the SUNY Delhi Broncos (3-3) in a closely contested match today by a score of 6-3. The win for the Hawks is the second in their last three matches and is Hartwick's first win over a non-conference opponent this season.
The match started with a dominating win at first doubles for sophomore
John Talbot (Middlesex, NY/Marcus Whitman) and freshman
Krishna Patel (Brunswick, ME/Pine Tree Academy) as they took down the Broncos' top duo without dropping a game, 8-0. The other doubles point came from
Liam Brown (Suffield, CT/Suffield) and
Ross Braue (Canastota, NY/Canastota) at second doubles after outlasting Rob Zawadzki and Shaquille Hamilton 8-6.
The Hawks were able to extend their lead to 4-1 with dominating singles performances from Talbot and Braue. Talbot improved his singles record on the year to 4-3 after defeating Zawadzki 6-1, 6-1. Braue extended his win streak to three for the first time in his college career by taking down Hamilton at fourth singles 6-1, 6-1.
The remaining singles matches all went the distance in three sets. The Hawks were able to clinch the match after
Sami Chaudry (Lahore, Pakistan/Aitchison College) defeated Lac Van at fifth singles for his first collegiate victory. Chaudry had to fight back from a one-set deficit to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman
Kelli Ryan (Plattsburgh, NY/Seton Catholic) was also able to walk away with a win in her first match of the spring season after defeating Andrew Eccleston in another comeback victory 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 at sixth singles.
The Hawks return to the court
tomorrow when they play Ithaca College on the road at
4 p.m.
