No. 21 Stevens Dominates E8 Doubleheader

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (April 23, 2016) – The No. 21 Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team came-away with a pair of 9-0 wins Saturday over Empire 8 Conference opponents St. John Fisher College and Nazareth College.  

The wins moved Stevens to 13-7 (6-0), while Fisher and Naz fell to 7-5 (3-2), and 4-11 (3-3) respectively.

The veteran/rookie duo of senior Jacob Thigpen and freshman Divin Sarthak grabbed the early lead with an 8-0 victory at third doubles, followed by 8-1 and 8-3 wins at second and first respectively for sophomore Danny Polk/junior Michael Feldman, and seniors Matthew Heinrich/Ben Foran.

Sophomore Kyle Henry continued the run with a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles, followed by Heinrich's 7-5, 6-1 victory at first to clinch the match. Sophomore David Schulz picked-up a victory of his own with a 6-1 6-1 win at fifth, in addition to a 6-4, 6-4 win at second for Polk.

Junior Charles Drake made it 8-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at third, before Sarthak capped the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at sixth. 

The win was the team-leading 11th of the season for Heinrich, while Foran entered double-digits with his victory.

Stevens' doubles aces of Heinrich/Foran started the winning with an 8-1 victory at first doubles, before Polk/Feldman won for the second time of the day with an 8-1 win at second. Sophomore William Persson and Schulz secured the doubles sweep soon after with an 8-1 win at third. 

The win was the 13th of the season for Foran/Heinrich, and third for Persson/Schulz.

Foran continued the winning with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at first, followed by a 6-1, 6-0 win for Polk at second to clinch the win. Feldman also won his match 6-0, 6-0 at third, in addition to another 6-0, 6-0 win for Persson at fourth. 

Sarthak and Thigpen sealed the shutout with straight-set wins of their own at fifth and sixth respectively to finalize Stevens' shutout win.
