St. John Fisher Clinches Empire 8 Regular Season Championship
The St. John Fisher College baseball team swept a twinbill against Empire 8 rival Ithaca College Saturday afternoon at Dugan Yard. With the victories, the Cardinals clinched the Empire 8 regular season championship and will host the Empire 8 Conference tournament May 12-14.
Fisher came from behind to take game one, 7-5, and took the lead early in the nightcap to close out the doubleheader with a 9-3 win.
First baseman
Scott Eisenmenger led all Cardinal hitters with six RBIs. He finished the day going 3-for-7 with three doubles and a run scored.
The Cardinals are home tomorrow at 1 p.m. for Senior Day as the team closes out the home season against Ithaca.
Game One:
Trailing, 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals rallied to score six runs on five hits and an error to make it 7-5 and take the lead for good.
Frank Carnevale started the inning off with a six-pitch walk.
Malcolm Kelsey and
Joe Simmons singled back-to-back as Carnevale came around to score to give the Cardinals runners on first and third with no outs. Kelsey scored on a throwing error by the catcher as Simmons stole second.
Cody Wiktorski singled to score Simmons which brought Fisher within a run. With two-outs and a man on,
Nate Roethel singled and shortstop
Mike Roman drew a free pass to load the bases. Eisenmenger's double to left center cleared the bases and put the Cardinals in front.
Reliever
Kevin Berge picked up his first win of the season. The righty threw 3.1 innings allowing just one hit, a run and two walks.
Loukas Brigham earned the save using just eight pitches to end the game.
Game Two:
Fisher took an early 3-0 lead after the first two innings before putting the game away in the bottom of the third as it plated five runs on four hits and an error.
Roman doubled to center to start things off. He later scored on Eisenmenger's double into the left-center field gap. After back-to-back fly outs to left, Simmons drew a five pitch walk to keep the inning alive. Eisenmenger later came around to score as catcher
Jack Vivinetto singled to center. With runners on the corners for Fisher, a fielding error by the third baseman allowed
Evan Ryan to reach first and score Simmons from third. Both Vivnetto and Ryan advanced one bag apiece on a wild pitch which allowed Wiktorski to drive in both runners as he singled to center.
The Cardinals tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth.
As a team, Fisher had five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple) for the game.
Junior starting pitcher
Marc Iseneker improved his record to 5-2 on the year. He allowed three runs on six hits over the course of seven innings, while striking out six.
