Stevens Takes Eastern Invite Title
RISING SUN, Md. (April 3, 2016) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's golf team placed first with a 334 Sunday as the Eastern Spring Invitational.
The one-day invitational took place at the Rising Sun Golf Course in Rising Sun, Maryland. Players battled cold and windy conditions throughout the day on the par-71, 6,749 yard course.
Host Eastern University also shot a 334 to tie the Ducks, but Stevens was awarded the championship via the tiebreaker for each team's fifth-place golfer. Messiah College finished third with a 341, while Ursinus College shot a 357.
Junior
Frank Szucs took first individually with a 78, and was just the third player to shoot a sub-80 round. Senior
Justin Niemeier shot an 84, while freshmen
Tyler Balkema and
Jack Doherty each shot an 86 to round-out the Stevens scoring.
Entered as an individual, sophomore
Andrew Sanderson played an impressive round, braving the conditions with an 81.
Messiah's Jordan Kirsch and Eastern's Ryan Torresin each shot a 79 to tie for second, while Ursinus' Matthew Holmes matched Sanderson's 81.
The Ducks will return to the course next weekend with the two-day NYU Invitational in Bloomfield.
