Fisher Golf Tied For Third After Day One At NCAAs
The St. John Fisher College men's golf team is tied for third place after the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship. The Cardinals shot a 298 ( 14) in its first round, played on Tuesday at the 6,645-yard, par-71 Mendon Golf Club.
California's Claremont-Mudd Scripps shot a 286 ( 2) on Tuesday and is in first place, while University of St. Thomas ( 13) is in second place. Methodist University, the defending national champions and winners of 11 national titles, are tied with Fisher for third place.
Ian Campbell led the Cardinals on the day, shooting a 1-over-par round of 72. He had 12 pars, three birdies, two bogeys and one double on the day.
"We got off to a pretty good start, but I really thought we should have scored better on our final nine holes," said head coach
Bob Simms on Tuesday afternoon. "Ian played really well and come through for us, but we're going to need our four other guys to step it up."
Corey Haas and
Jeff Palmerino each finished at 3. Haas made one par on his final nine holes, carding five bogeys and three birdies.
Karl Deuble ( 7) and
Christopher Salone ( 8) were Fisher's other two golfers on the day.
Fisher will play its second round at Midvale Country Club at 12:30 on Wednesday. After Wednesday, the field of 41 teams will be cut down to 15 for Thursday and Friday's final two rounds, which will both be played at Midvale.
