Elmira and Utica Conclude Season at Oswego State Spring Invite
Oswego, NY -- The Elmira College and Utica College men's golf teams wrapped up its 2015-16 season on Sunday afternoon with the final round of the two-day 2016 Oswego State Spring Invitational.
The Soaring Eagles improved on their opening-round score by eight strokes, marking a cumulative four-man score of 341 (+57). Unfortunately, EC was unable improve on its position following first-round action on Saturday, finishing in fifth-place out of the eight-team field with a two-round score of 690 (+122). Utica closed out the Laker Spring Tournament in eighth place on Sunday. The team totaled a score of 836 after two days of competition.
It was a neck-and-neck battle to end for the overall team championship. Oswego State's 'A' and 'B' squads, as well as SUNY Cobleskill all entered the day within two-strokes of each other. Cobleskill and the Lakers' B-team both marked rounds of 327 (+43) to finish in a tie for first-place with two-round scores of 653 (+85), while the A-team finished one shot back with a 654 (+86). The Fighting Tigers took the team medalist honors on a tiebreaker.
Individually, the Soaring Eagles were led by
Brandon Payne '17, who backed up his 86 (+15) from yesterday's opening round with an 84 (+13) today. He finished in 15
th-place overall, which was his second-highest finish at a competition this season.
Jake Lawson '16 had a huge bounce-back round for EC. The senior carded a 92 (+21) on his first round, but marked the eighth-lowest round of the day with an 82 (+11). The 10-stroke improvement helped Lawson rise from a tie for 32
nd to a tie for 21
st.
Charl Pretorius '19 and
Dan Gridley '18 were next up for EC, finishing back-to-back in 23
rd and 24
th-place, respectively. Pretorius improved one stroke from his opening round, firing an 87 (+16), while Gridley took a step back during his second round. The second-year golfer marked an 84 (+13) on day one, but had his score rise to a 92 (+21) on Sunday's round.
Jessy Lawson '16 showed a three-stroke improvement on day two. He carded a second-round score of 88 (+17), finishing in a tie for 28
th-place.
Nicholas Neary '19 had a tough time following up his opening round 90 (+19), but fell back with a 98 (+27) to come in tied for 34
th-place.
The Pioneers were led by
Ryan Sosnowski (Alden, NY/Alden) who shot a 92 on day two and placed 32
nd overall after shooting a combine score of 183 for both days.
Brandon Schachtler (Waterville, NY/Waterville) finished one spot behind Sosnowski in 33
rdplace with a two-day score of 184 after shooting an 89 on the second day.
Logan Winder(Ilion, NY/Central Valley Academy) placed 38
th overall with a combined score of 197 while
Richard Drake (Clifton Park, NY/Catholic Central) finished 39
th with a score of 272.
