Cardinals Advance To Sweet 16 In NCAAs
St. John Fisher College advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship for the second time in program history, as the Cardinals cruised to an 18-2 win over visiting Calvin College on Saturday afternoon at Fisher's Growney Stadium.
With the win, Fisher, ranked No. 18 in the latest in the national coaches poll, improves to 17-3 on the year, setting a new College record for wins in a season.
Fisher will now advance to the third round and will play the winner of tomorrow's Middlebury College/FDU-Florham game. Sites and times for third round NCAA matchups will be announced at a later date. Fisher only other appearance in the Sweet 16 came back in 2009.
Eight different players scored in the first half, as the Cardinals took an 11-1 lead after the first half with
Cori Holbrook's three goals leading the way.
Jamie Wallace scored as the horn sounded to end the first half and put Fisher up 10.
The Cardinals kept it going over the final 30 minutes as well as
Mackenzie LeVan tallied three goals in the second half, while
Carly Sullivan scored two of her three goals in the second half as well.
Jordan Johnson led Fisher on the day with five points on two goals and three assists,
Kelsie Schindler finished with three points on one goal and two assists.
Chrissy Cook recorded two assists and led Fisher with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.
Cassie Knowlton,
Sierra Badger and
Kaitlyn Agedal each finished with one goal and one assist.
Lexi Peebles also scored, while
Brenna Sherman scored her first goal at the collegiate level.
Morgan Young won three draws and scooped up three ground balls, while Holbrook tallied four ground balls.
Goalie
Hayley Peets played the first 30 minutes and stopped two shots to earn the win.
Molly Maguire made one save over 18 minutes, while
Jenn Crater also recorded one save.
