Athletes of the Week: May 9-15, 2016
There were some great performances last week as the Empire 8 crowned its Baseball champion and track and field athletes competed in last chance meets. Those earning weekly honors for the week of May 9-15, 2016 include....
Baseball Player - St. John Fisher
Malcom Kelsey, Junior, OF – Piscataway, NJ/Rutgers Preparatory
Junior Malcom Kelsey went 11-for-24 with a .458 batting average and a .750 slugging percentage over the course of six games. He finished the week with two doubles, one triple, one home run and four RBI’s. During the Empire 8 tournament, Fisher bounced back from dropping its first game of the tournament to force a winner-take-all championship game. In championship game that went extra innings, he went 2-for-4 at the plate for his 12
th multi-hit game of the season. Kelsey was 9-for-19 (.473) at the plate during tournament and totaled nine putouts in the outfield to earn all-tournament recognition.
Baseball Pitcher - Ithaca
John Prendergast, Senior – Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa
Senior John Prendergast was named MVP of the baseball championship after earning two victories over the weekend. Prendergast tossed seven shutout innings and gave up just two hits with three strikeouts in a 9-1 opening win against Stevens. He needed just 71 pitches to get through the start. During Sunday's extra inning triumph over Fisher, 9-7, Prendergast threw 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Men's Outdoor Track Athlete - St. John Fisher
James Felice, Sophomore – Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy
James Felice set a new Fisher school record in the 5,000 meter and won the event by posting a time of 15:16 at the St. John Fisher Last Chance Meet on Saturday.
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Luis Rivera, Senior – Rochester, NY/James Monroe
Senior Luis Rivera measured out 55.36 meters (181 feet, 7 inches) in the hammer throw to place first overall in the field of 14 competitors at the St. John Fisher Last Chance Meet on Saturday. Rivera beat the runner-up by two meters.
Women's Outdoor Track Athlete - St. John Fisher
Melissa Vaughn, Junior – Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park
Junior Melissa Vaughn broke her own school record in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.16 to win the event during the Last Chance Meet at St. John Fisher College.
Women's Outdoor Field Athlete - Utica
Sarah Wiatr, Senior – Poland, NY/West Canada Valley
Sarah Wiatr broke her own school-record in the triple jump at the Last Chance Meet at St. John Fisher College Saturday with a jump of 12.28m which ranks her fourth nationally in Division III. She also had a personal best jump of 5.59m in the long jump which ranks her 27th nationally.
