Track & Field Teams Begin ECAC Championships

RESULTS

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Empire 8 track and field athletes competed in the first day of the ECAC Outdoor Championships on Wednesday at Gravel Track on the campus of Westfield State University.

WOMEN
Ithaca junior Katherine Pitman won the pole vault with a performance of 3.96 meters.

Utica senior All-American Sarah Wiatr won the women's triple jump and remains undefeated on the season with a distance of 12.15 meters. Ithaca sophomore Grace Ryan was a runner-up in the triple jump with a leap of 11.56 meters. Nazareth senior Amanda Entress placed fourth (11.38m)

Ithaca sophomore Taryn Cordani claimed second in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:19.51 and Stevens Institute of Technology freshman Mary Visca took sixth (17:47.33).

Alfred sophomore Lindsay Piraino placed third in the 10,000 meter run. Piraino's third-place time of 38:03.90 bettered her school record of 38:07.29 set earlier this month at the New York State championship meet.

Sophomore Denise Ibarra ran a time of 11:05.50 in the steeplechase to come in fifth.

Sophomore Caitlin Noonan was a seventh place finisher in the hammer throw at 48.25 meters. 

St. John Fisher's 4x4 of Chelsea ClevelandEmily StrongSydney Saccone and Jess Colmerauer medaled with a 6th place finish and a new school record of 3:57.39.

Fisher's Melissa Vaughn finished 16th out of 34 in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.45.

Utica's Mikey Maxwell currently sits in sixth place after four events on day one of the heptathlon with a personal record of 2530. Maxwell placed fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 15.20. She added a third place finish in the 200 meter dash, tying her personal best, with a time of 26.70. She placed 12thwith a clearance of 1.45 meters in the high jump and she also added a 12th place finish in the women's shot put with a distance of 8.19 meters. Ithaca sophomore Brianna Hayes is 10th overall in the heptathlon after four events with 2334 points.

MEN
Utica's Nicodemus Gambill was the top finisher in the men's 100 meter dash preliminaries as he posted a season-best time of 10.55 and will enter Saturday's finals as the top seed. 

Stevens senior Tom Cunningham won the 10,000 meter run in 31:39.47, almost 20 full seconds ahead of the runner-up. Ithaca sophomore Tim Chappell placed fifth in 32:23.21 and Alfred junior Kevin Dixon was sixth (32:47.27).

Utica freshman Tyler Wright placed seventh in the men's 3000 meter steeple chase with a time of 9:32.64.

Nazareth's 4x400 meter relay team of Nick LaBarbera, M.J. Morris, Tom Sippie and Matt Battaglia placed sixth overall with a time of 3:17.64. Utica's relay team of Shane RuffingErik GlebaTyler Sutton and Kevin Gangemi placed 16th overall and shattered the school-record with a time of 3:20.11. Fisher's 4x4 of Trevor WilkesNoah MurrayJack Behlmaier and Peter Girardi finished 18th with a new school record of 3:20.65.

Ithaca sophomore David Dorsey recorded a mark of 4.61 meters in the pole vault to place fifth in the event.
Nazareth senior Luis Rivera took second in the hammer throw with a distance of 57.32 meters and Ithaca junior Larry Cass placed seventh with a mark of 53.24 meters.

Alfred sophomore Seth Spicer currently ranks third out of 13 competitors in the decathlon after five events. Spicer placed first in the shot put with a distance of 12.53m, third in the 400 meter (52.08) and fourth in the high jump (1.80m). Ithaca sophomore Seth Abbott currently sits in 10th in the decathlon with 2820 points. Junior Tyler Denn-Thiele is 13th at 2280.

Athletes will be back in action tomorrow morning for the final day of the championships.
