St. John Fisher College took game in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Rochester Super Regional, as the Cardinals came through with a 2-1 win over visiting Manhattanville College on Friday afternoon.

With the win, Fisher improves to 37-10 overall, while Valaints fall to 41-4.  Game two in the best-of-three series will be played at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Fisher's Softball Complex.  An "if necessary" game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Sophomore pitcher Lindsey Thayer allowed just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out nine batters to raise her record to 27-5 on the year.  The righty, who leads all of NCAA Division III with 414 strikeouts, became the second player in Fisher history to go the 700-mark for her career with a strikeout in the first inning.

Fisher took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Freshman Julia Sortisio singled and advanced to second on bunt-single from Katie Mazierski.  After a sacrifice-bunt from Ashley Prince, Karlie Neale walked to load the bases.

Freshman Sarah Kubik helped score Fisher's first run, reaching on a hit-by-pitch to score Sortisio.

In the second inning, Sortiso doubled to right-center and scored on a single to right from Mazierski for the eventual game-winning round.

Both hits for Manhattanville came in the third inning with two hits. Ashley Scapperotti reached on a perfectly-placed bunt and stole second.  Sophia Chapelone then singled to shortstop with the runner scoring on an over-throw at first.

Thayer retired the final 12 batters in order to preserve the win.

Lauren Owens, Sortisio and Mazierski each finished with two hits to lead Fisher.
