Cardinals Come Up Short In NCAA Sweet 16
The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team saw its season come to a close as the Cardinals rally came up short, falling 12-9 to host Middlebury College in the NCAA Division III Regional Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
Eighteenth-ranked Fisher closed the season out with a 17-4 record, while No. 5 Middlebury improves to 19-1. The Panthers advance to tomorrow's NCAA Regional Finals where they will face either Gettysburg or Amherst.
Fisher came out firing in the second half as
Jordan Johnson tallied her first goal of the game from
Mackenzie LeVan pass. With 22:58 remaining in the game, Badger scored her 30
th goal of the season to make it 11-5.
Middlebury scored its lone goal of the second half with 17:07 remaining to make it a 12-5 game.
The Cardinals scored the next four goals between four different players to bring Fisher within three with under a minute to go.
Chrissy Cook started the rally as she netted her 28
th goal of the year with 13:07 left.
Carly Sullivan followed Cook up as she received a pass from Johnson to make it 12-7.
Johnson scored her second goal of the game to bring the Cardinals within four and teammate
Molly Rourke scored with a minute remaining to cap off the rally.
Jamie Wallace scored the first Fisher goal just 2:12 into the first half. Middlebury answered by tying the game up 40 seconds after Fisher got on the board and then 28 seconds after tying the game took a 2-1 lead.
Cori Holbrook tied the game at two for the Cardinals with 24:00 remaining in the half. The Panthers again scored back-to-back goals to go up 4-2 with 18:50 left. Fisher's LeVan made it a 4-3 game off a pass from
Sierra Badger with 17:04 remaining in the first half.
The Panthers closed out the first half on a seven-goal run to make it 11-3.
Johnson paced Fisher with her two goals, an assist and a three shots for the contest. Fisher took 19 shots for the game, 18 of which were on goal. Holbrook led the team with three ground balls to go along with her goal.
Six of the nine goals Fisher netted in the contest were unassisted.
