Texas-Tyler Defeats Fisher at NCAA Softball Championships
Bracket
The St. John Fisher College softball team fell 2-0 to the University of Texas at Tyler in the first game of the NCAA Division III Softball College World Series on Thursday. Fisher will have another chance to remain in the national championship tournament tomorrow when they will square off at 11 a.m. against St. Thomas (Minn.) in an elimination game.
St. Thomas fell to Emory 3-2 on Thursday.
Fisher and UTT were scoreless through two innings as freshman Sarah Kubik recorded the first hit of the game for the Cardinals on a single to centerfield in the top of the second. The Patriots would put two runs on the board in the third inning on a two-run home run that would give UTT the 2-0 lead that held through the next four innings.
The Cardinals would have just one more hit in the sixth inning from Julia Sortisio, followed shortly by an error by the Patriots that led Katie Mazierski to first base. Ashley Prince grounded out on the following play ending the inning.
Both pitchers threw seven innings as Fisher’s Lindsey Thayer surrendered just four hits, while UTT pitcher Kelsie Batton gave up just two. Each pitcher struck out nine total batters.
