Heinrich & Zeevy Honored By ITA
TEMPE, Ariz. (May 25, 2016) – Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis senior
Matthew Heinrich was named
Northeast Region Senior Player of the Year, while assistant coach
Arik Zeevy was named National and Regional
Assistant Coach of the Year Wednesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The ITA honor is the fourth of Heinrich's career after a regional and national rookie of the year nod in 2012-13, and the national player to watch award in 2013-14. The coaching honor is the second straight for Stevens tennis after head coach
Steve Gachko's regional and national coach of the year award last season.
Heinrich led the Ducks with 15 singles victories this season en route to being named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive season. The All-American teamed with senior
Ben Foran to win a team-high 18 doubles matches as well, while leading the Ducks to a win in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament earlier this month.
Earlier this season Heinrich became the first player in program history to amass 100 singles victories, and he'll be making his third-straight appearance in the NCAA Individual Championship when he takes the court tomorrow morning.
Zeevy continued to play a crucial role on the Ducks coaching staff as Stevens retained its spot amongst the elite of Division III tennis with a 19-win season in 2015-16. During Zeevy's tenure on the staff, Stevens has produced two ITA Regional champions, two All-Americans, achieved its first-ever national ranking, and reached the Round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.
Some of Zeevy's most important contributions have come on the recruiting trail however, where his efforts can be attributed to four straight nationally-ranked recruiting classes.
While Stevens' team season is over, Heinrich will be competing at both singles and doubles starting tomorrow at the NCAA Individual Championship under Zeevy's direction.
