Fisher Softball Downs MIT and Texas-Tyler To Stay Alive In College World Series
SALEM, VA – Sophomore Lindsey Thayer pitched back-to-back shutouts on Saturday to put Fisher one win away from a berth to the College World Series Finals. The Cardinals opened the day with a 1-0 blanking of MIT, before knocking off Texas-Tyler 1-0 in the nightcap.
With the two wins, Fisher has now set a new school record with 41 victories.
The Cardinals will face Texas-Tyler once again tomorrow at 11 am.
Game 1: Fisher 1, MIT 0
Fisher’s first hit came in the second inning on Karlie Neale single to left, however, the Cardinals were unable to push her along.
Kristina Balsano doubled in her first at-bat to get into scoring position with one out in the third inning. After the second out, Katie Mazierski bunted herself on to put runners on first and third. Ashley Prince was hit by a pitch the very next batter to load the bases, but Fisher was unable to capitalize.
After dominating the entire game, Fisher finally broke through in the fourth inning. Sarah Kubik got on base on an error and senior Lauren Owens came through with an RBI double to bring home the run and give Fisher a 1-0 advantage.
The Engineers did not get their first hit, a single, until the fifth inning with one out. Thayer mowed down the next two batters to keep MIT of the board.
Thayer was phenomenal on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out 14 batters.
Neale led the Cardinals on a 2-for-3 outing.
Game 2: Fisher 1, Texas-Tyler 0
After dropping the opening game of the College World Series to the Patriots, Fisher made good on its second opportunity.
Fisher out-hit Texas-Tyler 5-3 in the game and finally broke through in the seventh inning on a solo home run from Neale. It was the first-career home run for the junior.
The Cardinals also threatened in the previous inning with singles from Balsano and Prince, but were unable to cash in.
The Patriots started off the seventh inning with a single, before Thayer took care of the final three batters.
Thayer allowed just three hits and struck out seven in the win. She is now 31-6 on the season.
