Fisher Bows Out Of World Series
APPLETON, Wis (May 30, 2016) - The greatest season in the history of St. John Fisher College baseball came to an end on Memorial Day, as the Cardinals were eliminated from the NCAA Division III Championship College World Series with a 9-6 loss to La Roche College at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wisc.
With the loss, Fisher (39-13) finishes in a tie for fifth place at the CWS. It was the first time Fisher has advanced to the College World Series in the program's 29-year history, while the squad's 39 wins shattered the previous record for victories in a season (31).
Junior Nate Roethel led Fisher on the day, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two walks and three runs scored.
Junior Malcolm Kesley went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Frank Carnevale added a two-run pinch-hit single in the eighth, pulling the Cardinals within three runs at 7-4.
After two runs from LaRoche in the bottom of the eighth, Fisher scored its final two runs of the year on a two-run triple from senior Joe Simmons.
Senoir Mike Roman singled in the first inning, tying the College's single-season record for hits with 76. It was also his 215th career hit, putting him alone in second place on the College's all-time list.
Fisher will lose eight seniors to graduation. The 2016 class at Fisher won 123 games over their four-year career, the most by any graduating group.
