The St. John Fisher College women's tennis team shut out Utica College on Saturday by a score of 9-0. The win improves the Cardinals to 3-0 on the young season while Utica falls to 1-2.
The squad got off to a hot start when the first doubles pairing of Sarah Sorrentino and Taylor Slink won decisively, defeating their opponents 8-2. Olivia Rotondo and Katey Padden followed up that performance with an 8-2 win of their own before Amanda Pendergast and Caroline Seaberg rounded out the doubles sweep, shutting out Utica 8-0.
It was much of the same in singles, as Sorrentino once again led things off with a decisive 6-2, 7-5 victory. The second, third, fourth, and sixth each won in straight sets as well, with no Utica player winning more than four games in any set.
Pendergast had to fight for a victory in the fifth set against Utica's LuLu Shang. After splitting the first two sets, the third went to the wire before Pendergast eventually pulled ahead for the 10-8 win, completing the overall sweep.
Tennis will be back on their home court on Friday, Sept. 16 when they host Nazareth for a match beginning at 4 p.m.
