The St. John Fisher College men's golf program is in first place after round one of the 2016 Empire 8 Conference Championship.  The Cardinals shot a 314 ( 25) on Saturday in the opening round at Timber Banks Country Club.  The first two rounds of the Empire 8 Championship will be played in the fall season, while the final two rounds will be played in the spring.  The winning team will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.  Fisher has won the Empire 8 title each of the last six seasons.

Senior Karl Deuble is in first place overall with a 74, while classmate Joel Jakubowicz is in third at 77 ( 5).  TeammatesNicholas Calabrese and Jeff Palmerino each shot 81.

Stevens Senior Frank Szucs led the Ducks with a three over 75, placing the veteran in second place heading into tomorrow. Szucs opened his round with a triple bogey on the par-four first, but rebounded with birdies on second, fourth and 13th in addition to 11 pars. 

Sophomore Ezekiel Zhao and junior Andrew Sanderson finished tied for second on the team with an 82, while freshman Joseph Kozlowski carded an 83 in his collegiate debut. Zhao shot one under on the back thanks to a three-birdie round, to go along with two birdies each for Sanderson and Kozlowski.

Scranton senior Tyler Huggins shot a 7-over-par 79 in difficult conditions to lead The Royals. Huggins overcame windy conditions and difficult greens to shoot even par on the back nine after a slow start. His 79 was good for a tie for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Karl Deuble from St. John Fisher holds a one-shot lead after a 2-over 74.

Sophomore Kyle Hayes (East Norwich, N.Y./Oyster Bay) finished with 83 and is tied for 11th, junior Michael Boland (Dallas, Pa./Holy Redeemer) is tied for 14th after shooting 84, and senior Steven Lambrinakos (Stamford, Conn./Trinity) and juniorDavid Harris (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) tied for the team's fourth score with 87.

Moravian is in fourth place after the opening round of the 2016-17 Empire 8 Conference Championships Saturday.  The Greyhounds had a team score of 334.

Junior Tyler Smith is tied for fourth after the opening 18 holes with a round of 79 that featured one birdie and 10 pars. Sophomore Kody Long is tied for 14th with first round score of 84 that included a birdie and 10 pars while junior Kevin Kunkle is in 20th place with an opening round of 85 with 10 pars.
