The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias Players of the Week for the week of play ending Sept. 18 and five Empire 8 student-athletes have been recognized.
 
Football North
Defensive Player of the Week
Demarre Nelson - St. John Fisher College, So., CB


Nelson sealed Fisher's 31-24 win over No. 15 ranked SUNY Cortland on Saturday as he made two interceptions in the Fisher red-zone in the final three minutes. The first was made at his own 7-yard line with 3:08 remaining in the game. Fisher was forced to punt on its next possession, giving Cortland the ball at midfield with 1:01 remaining, but Nelson again came up big, making his second interception at the Fisher 17 with seven seconds left.

Special Teams Player of the Week
Nicodemus Gambill - Utica College, Sr., KR/RB


Gambill posted three kickoff returns for 151 yards and set a new school-record with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as the Pioneers topped Morrisville 28-21 Saturday night. Gambill's 151 return yards ranks third on the College's single game list. In the third quarter Morrisville took a 21-14 lead with an 89-yard touchdown run at the 10:18 mark of the quarter. Gambill answered on the ensuing kickoff with his 99-yard touchdown return to tie the score at 21-21 with 10:04 remaining in the third quarter.

Defensive Player of the Week
Zach Jacobsen - Ithaca College, Sr., GK


Jacobsen earned two more shutout wins in net last week including one in conference play after the Bombers blanked both Wells College and Stevens Institute of Technology. Jacobsen combined to play all 180 minutes in goal and made seven combined saves. Against Wells, the senior registered two saves before stopping five shots against the Ducks. The win against Stevens marked the first conference loss for Stevens since 2009.
 
Women’s Cross Country – North
Runner of the Week
Taryn Cordani – Ithaca College, Jr.

 
Cordani bested the field at the 6,000-meter race at the University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational in a time of 21:16.0. Cordani was nearly 12 seconds faster than the next closest runner in the field. She finished ahead of every runner from Division I Cornell University, whose top seven runners were within the first 10 to finish.

Offensive Player of the Week
Christina Sciarra – Stevens Institute of Technology, Sr., OPP

 
Sciarra recorded her 1,000th career kill in leading the Ducks to a perfect 5-0 week, including straight set wins over regional powers New Paltz and Stockton. Sciarra had double-digit kills in four of the five matches, including 12 in the Empire 8 opener over Hartwick. Against New Paltz, she recorded 13 kills and eight digs, and tallied a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs against Oneonta on Saturday. She finished the week with 53 kills, 36 digs, nine blocks and six aces.
