Ithaca Finishes Second, Jones Earns Medalist Honors at Martin-Wallace Invite
CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College golf team returned to Cortland Country Club for final round action at the Martin-Wallace Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Carrying a two-stroke advantage into the final round, the Bombers locked in a tight battle with Methodist University at the top of the team standings. On the strength of a final round cumulative score of 311 (+23), Methodist (627; +51) was able to edge Ithaca (658; +58), which shot a 320 (+32) on Sunday, by seven strokes.
Although Ithaca was not able to hold onto the lead to secure its second team title in as many weeks,
Indiana Jones secured individual medalist honors at the tournament, marking the third individual tournament title of her career.
Jones carded an opening round 72 (E) to carry a five-stroke lead into Sunday's final round. She maintained the edge throughout the day, finishing with a 78 (+6) for a two-round score of 150 (+6). The 36-hole score marked the lowest of her collegiate career, shattering her previous two-round low score of 156.
Senior,
Kimberley Wong, was Ithaca's other player to break 80 on Sunday, as Wong shaved two strokes from her opening round score to shoot a 78 (+6). She finished in seventh-place overall with a 36-hole score of 158 (+14). The finish marked her third top-10 finish in as many appearances this season.
Junior,
Kyra Denish, and freshman,
Peyton Greco, rounded out the Bombers' counting scores on day two, both carding rounds of 82 (+10). Denish finished with a two-day total of 161 (+17) to come in eighth place. Greco's 82 (+10) marked the second time in as many days that she set a new career low round. Her final round 82 brought her two-day total to 165 (+21), lifting the freshman into 12
th place overall at the tournament.
Senior,
Mary Rooker, showed excellent improvement from her first round. She cut nine strokes to post an 89 (+17), elevating seven places in the player standings to finish in a tie for 28
th.
Colleen Vaughn and Moll Walsh also saw action at the tournament. Vaughn shot a 106 (+34) on day one and a 107 (+35) on Sunday to come in 42
nd place. Walsh marked an 88 (+16) on Saturday, but did not compete in Sunday's final round.
The Bombers return to action next weekend when they play host to the Empire 8 Conference Championships at Ithaca Country Club on Saturday, October 1, and Sunday, October 2.
