HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth won all three doubles matches Wednesday to take an early lead the Golden Flyers went on to defeat Houghton in an Empire8 Conference women's tennis match, 8-1.
Nazareth improved to 4-1 in conference matches and 4-2 overall. Houghton dropped to 1-5 in the E8 and 3-5 overall. Nazareth hosts Ithaca Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Golden Flyers set the tone early Wednesday by taking all threew doubles matches. Sophomores
Allison Friends and
Marisa Joyce won in a tiebreaker at first doubles, winning 9-8 with a 7-4 tiebreaker.
The second doubles match was close as well with senior
Jean McCarthy and sophomore
Elizabeth Karstedt winning 9-7. Nazareth also won at third doubles with sophomore
Maeve Morgan and freshman
Maelah Nadeau combining for an 8-1 victory.
Karstedt earned a point at fourth singles with a close victory, downing Jacquelyn Lewis 7-5, 7-6. Nazareth also won a close match at #6 as sophomore
Aliana Burgos won 6-4, 6-4 over Houghton's Amanda Carl. Friends, Joyce and Nadeau each won singles matches in straight sets.
Houghton's lone point came at first singles, where Caroline Phillips defeated McCarthy 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
