Athletes of the Week: Jan. 2-8, 2017
Last week marked the first full seven days back on the hardwood as the men's and women's basketball programs began conference play and there were several top performances for fans to indulge in. Those earning weekly honors for the week of Jan. 2 - 8, 2017 include....
Men’s Basketball Player – Houghton
Johnathan Stowe, Senior, Forward – Toronto, CAN/ Don Mills Collegiate Institute
Johnathan Stowe averaged 15.67 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in a 2-1 week for Houghton. He was 17 of 26 from the floor (65 percent) and made all 13 of his free throw attempts. Stowe began the week with 14 points and 16 rebounds in a 78-76 victory at D’Youville on Tuesday. In a win against Nazareth he scored 31 points, making 10 of 12 shots from the field and grabbed 14 rebounds.
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Utica
Hunter Remley, Freshman, G/F – Cranford, NJ/Cranford
Hunter Remley averaged 21.5 points as he shot 59 percent from the field (17-of-29) including seven three-pointers. He shot 6-for-12 from the field to earn a team-high of 16 points against Stevens. He also added two blocks in the contest. He led the team in scoring in the game versus Hartwick with his career-high of 27 points, shooting 11-for-17 from the field. He also included three blocks, three assists, and three rebounds to help Utica earn its first win of the season.
Women’s Basketball Player – Hartwick
Jacqui Foreman, Senior, Forward – Tolland, CT/Tolland
Jacqui Foreman led Hartwick with double-doubles in each of the Hawks’ three Empire 8 victories. For the week, she averaged team-bests of 17 points and 14.7 rebounds while shooting 59% (20-for-34) from the floor. She also grabbed 44 rebounds, including 14 offensive boards, with nine assists, and four steals. Foreman began the week with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds in a 57-35 victory at Elmira on Tuesday. Two days later, she had game-highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 62-52 road win against Utica and closed her week with 18 points and a game-high 15 boards in an 11-point win against Ithaca. Foreman also dished out three assists in each of the Hawks’ wins.
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Nazareth
Rachel Benedict, Freshman, Forward, Brockport, NY/Brockport
Rachel Benedict averaged 11.75 points, 8.75 rebounds, two steals and 1.75 assists per game in a 2-2 week for Nazareth. She recorded a double-double with 19 points (6-for-19) and 11 boards, to go along with a career-high four steals in a 67-65 overtime loss to Hilbert on Wednesday. She had 14 points on an efficient 4-for-7 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds in a 88-64 win over Alfred Friday. She closed out the week with eight points (3-for-8) and 10 rebounds in a 50-47 victory over Houghton.
