The SUNY Cortland women's golf team currently sits in first place after recording a team score of +56 on Saturday at the opening round of the 2017 Empire 8 Women's Golf Championship at Ballston Spa Country Club. 

The Red Dragons, who are in their first season of affiliate membership, hold a 37-stroke lead over Suffolk University which finished its round at +96. St. John Fisher College sits in third place at +109 while Johnson & Wales (+112) and Keuka College (+115) round out the top five. 

As a team, Cortland tallied three birdies and recorded 35 pars. 

Cortland's Tiffany Schapira shot an 82 through 18 holes to hold a four stroke lead over teammate Hannah Fitzgerald (86). 

Cortland's Anna Haley is in third with a +15 (87) and Elmira senior Audrey Clarke shot an 88  to lead the Soaring Eagles. 

Keuka's Holly Renolds, and Cortland's Kristin Scali and Brianna Sovring are tied for fifth place with a score of 89.

The seven golfers at the top of the leaderboard were the only competitors to fire under 90.
