The Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced that 16 student-athletes in 10 different sports have been recognized for outstanding play during the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1. 
 
Football Offensive Player – The College at Brockport
Joe Germinerio, Sophomore, QB – Troy, NY/LaSalle
 
Joe Germinerio had one of his best outings of the season on Saturday afternoon against Cortland. He completed 15-of-21 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns through the air while adding 95 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns.
He showed off his arm strength in the second quarter, finding Tyree Brown for a 54-yard touchdown pass.
 
Football Defensive Player – Alfred
Nick Milgate, Sophomore, LB – Hilton, NY/Hilton
 
Sophomore Nick Milgate had a career day on Saturday against Buffalo State. He broke collegiate career-highs in assisted tackles, total tackles and sacks. Milgate finished the game with 10 total tackles. Six of his tackles were assisted. He managed to break through for two sacks which resulted in a total loss of 16 yards for the Bengals. Early in the third quarter, senior teammate A.J. LiCata tipped up a pass from Buffalo State in which Milgate, managed to get under for his second interception in consecutive weeks.
 
Football Special Teams Player – The College at Brockport
Brett Renzi, Senior, Kicker – Spencerport, NY/Spencerport
 
Brett Renzi made a 33- yard field goal and all seven of his PAT kicks in Brockport’s 52-38 win over Cortland.  His field goal put the Golden Eagles back in striking distance when they were trailing midway through the second quarter.
 
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Stevens
Greg Arabagian, Senior – Morristown, NJ/Morristown
 
Senior Greg Arabagian led the Ducks with a time of 25:54 in the 8k, good for 11th place out of 235 entrants in the Saratoga Invitational.
 
Women’s Cross Country Runner – Stevens
Mary Visca, Junior – Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland
 
Junior Mary Visca continued the torrid start to her season with a fourth-place finish out of 221 runners at the Saratoga Invitational. Visca came in with a mile pace of 5:44 and a total time of 17:46 in the 5k, just one second out of third place.
 
Men’s Golf Athlete – SUNY Oswego
Sean Paul Owen, Junior – Horseheads, NY/Horseheads
 
Sean Paul Owen participated in two Invitationals and won medalist honors both. On Tuesday at the Elmira College Invitational, the junior led the day with a score of 71, which was one-stroke under par for the 18-hole course. His impressive performance was the best at the Elmira College Invitational since at least the 2011-12 season. Owen led the Lakers to victory with a team score of 26. Over the weekend at the Oswego State Fall Invitational, Owen once again earned first place for individuals. He shot 74 on both Saturday and Sunday. The Horseheads native helped the Lakers' "A" squad to the runner-up slot behind Oswego "B."
 
Women’s Golf Player – SUNY Cortland
Danielle Bambola, Sophomore – Miller Place, NY/Miller Place
 
Danielle Bambola finished first out of 51 golfers at Cortland's Martin/Wallace Invitational Saturday and Sunday at the Cortland Country Club. She recorded a season-best 74 on the opening day and a 77 on Sunday for a final score of 151, two strokes ahead of the runner-up. Bambola recorded 26 pars and two birdies during her 36 holes of action.
 
Field Hockey Offensive Player – St. John Fisher
Emily Markarian, Senior, Forward – Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park
 
Emily Markarian posted another impressive offensive week for the St. John Fisher College Field Hockey team. The senior forward notched a hat trick and one assist in a Cardinal’s 6-0 conference victory over Nazareth. Markarian then followed up her seven-point performance with another goal in the 3-0 Fisher win over New Paltz giving her a total of nine points for the week. Versus Nazareth, Markarian scored her first two goals only three minutes apart and within the first six minutes of the first half.
 
Field Hockey Defensive Player –  St. John Fisher
Ashley Maynard, Junior, Goalie – Rochester, NY/Hilton
 
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Maynard continued to be a force between the pipes for the St. John Fisher College Field Hockey team this past week. Maynard posted two shut out victories for the Cardinals at home; the first a 5-0 conference victory over Nazareth and then the following day a 3-0 non-conference win versus New Paltz. The Junior played all 70 minutes in both contests allowing zero goals against on 11 shots faced on net. She made 11 total saves throughout the week and posted 10 saves in the win over New Paltz.
 
Men’s Soccer Offensive Player – Nazareth
Zach Titus, Junior, Midfield – Rochester, NY/Aquinas
 
Zach Titus scored two goals in a 2-0 week for Nazareth including the game-winner on Saturday in Nazareth's 3-0 win over Utica. He also had a goal in the Golden Flyers 4-1 win over Pitt-Bradford.
 
Men’s Soccer Defensive Player –  Stevens
Aaron Henry, Junior, GK – Fayetteville, Ark./Fayetteville
 
Aaron Henry spun his third clean sheet of the season Saturday in a 2-0 victory over Houghton to keep the Ducks in a tie atop the E8 standings. Henry made three saves in the win.
 
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player – Stevens
Gabby Saade, Sophomore, Forward – West Windsor, NY/West Windsor Plainsboro
 
Gabby Saade scored three goals in a 2-0 week for the Ducks as Stevens earned its fifth and sixth shutouts of the season. Saade scored 26 seconds into the match for her third game-winning goal of the young season to provide the only offense in the 1-0 victory over Drew University on Wednesday night. She then netted two goals on Saturday in a 6-0 win against Elmira.
 
Women’s’ Soccer Defensive –  Alfred
Miranda Gilbert, Senior, Defender – Watertown, NY/Watertown
 
Senior Miranda Gilbert was instrumental in the Saxons’ undefeated week with her top performance occurring on Saturday. Gilbert, playing mostly defense but occasionally switching to midfield (substitutions pending) helped the Saxons keep host Bethany College (WV) away from scoring position. Gilbert and the defense held the Bisons to only one shot on goal and even with that, they made sure that senior Saxon goalkeeper, Sammy Jo Shanahan did not have to do any work for the full 90 minutes as the defense recorded a team save on the play at the end of regulation. Gilbert was also charged with the game-winning goal in the 24th minute of play. Gilbert received a well-placed throw in from teammate Alyssa Garbarino, turned and then scored from outside of the box for the 1-0 win. Earlier in the week, Gilbert and the Saxons held Houghton College to a 0-0 tie in Empire 8 action.
 
Women’s Tennis Player – Stevens
Isabella Calandra, Sophomore – Montclair, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy
 
Isabella Calandra had a 6-0 week for the Ducks, earning non-conference wins at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles against Muhlenberg, and then added conference victories against Houghton and Utica. Calandra slid into the No. 2 role for the weekend and bested Hartwick's Kelly Napolitano in three sets and defeated Utica's Julianne Pieros in straight sets. The Montclair, New Jersey native also paired with classmate Julia Earl to earn two wins at No. 1 doubles.
 
Women’s Volleyball Player –  Elmira
Natalie Schieder, Junior, OH – Alden, NY/Alden
 
Natalie Schieder averaged 3.77 kills and 3.38 digs per set to lead Elmira to a 3-1 record at the Canton Classic last weekend. She led Elmira with 49 kills, 12 service aces and was second on the team with 44 digs. Of the four matches, Scheider finished with double-digit kills in three of them. She recorded a 15-kill 21-dig double-double in Elmira's four-set victory over Plattsburgh State. The 15 kills were a weekend high, while the 21 digs was a season high.
 
Women’s Volleyball Rookie –  Nazareth
Savannah Bothner, Freshman, Libero – Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland
 
Savannah Bothner averaged 5.87 digs per set in a 2-2 week for the Golden Flyers. She also had three service aces and 19 assists on the week. She had 25 digs in a four set win over Buffalo State Wednesday. She had a career-high 35 digs in Nazareth's 4 set loss to Vassar on Saturday.
