The Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced that seven student-athletes in three different sports have been recognized for outstanding play during the week of Nov. 6-12, 2017....
Football Offensive Player – Alfred
Maleke Fuentes, Senior, RB – Olean, NY/Olean
Maleke Fuentes set a new Alfred University record in single-game rushing yards (295) and tied an AU and Empire 8 record with five rushing touchdowns - a feat he completed by the third quarter. Fuentes led a Saxon rushing attack that accumulated a school record 627 yards rushing in a 63-21 conference win.
Football Defensive Player – The College at Brockport
Josh Greenwood, Freshman – Endicott, NY/Greenwood
Josh Greenwood recorded five tackles (four solo) in Brockport's 28-7 win over St. Lawrence, helping secure a perfect 10-0 regular-season for the Golden Eagles. 2.5 of those tackles came for a loss, as the Green and Gold held the Saints to -3 yards on the ground (six sacks).
Football Special Teams Player – Alfred
Trevor Monk, Senior, K/P – Liverpool, NY/Liverpool
Trevor Monk tied an Empire 8 record with 9 made extra points in a 63-21 win over Hartwick on Saturday. Also had one punt for 31 yards and 10 kickoffs for a total of 501 yards (50.1 yards per attempt).
Men’s Cross Country Runner – Utica
Tyler Wright, Junior – Little Falls, NY/West Canada Valley
Junior Tyler Wright recorded the second fastest 8K time in program history of 25:37.5, beating his own previous mark of 25:38.9 that he set at last year's Atlantic Regional meet. Last time Wright finished 50th in the race, this time out he placed 38th and was UC's first runner to complete the course.
Women’s Cross Country Runner – Utica
Kaitlyn Stinson, Junior – South Kortright, NY/South Kortright
Kaitlyn Stinson led the way for the Pioneers, as she came in 23rd place individually with a time of 22:45.6. Last season at the Atlantic Regional meet, Stinson placed 57th. Stinson's time is now the third fastest 6K time in program history, after running the second fastest time of 22:36.5 last year. Stinson missed out on an NCAA Championship qualification by two runners.
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Hartwick
Aron Zhang, Junior – Douglaston, NY/Brooklyn Technical
Aron Zhang won a total of six individual races and he teamed for another one in a relay in a 1-1 week for the Hawks. On Saturday in a 156-138 win over SUNY Oneonta, he was first in the 100 backstroke (55.59), the 100 butterfly (52.93), and the 400 individual medley (4:21.49) while also combining with his teammates for a victory in the 200 medley relay. On Sunday in a 178-114 loss to RPI, Zhang won the 100 back (53.76) and 100 butterfly (52.53) again. He also finished first in the 200 IM in 1:58.75.
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Hartwick
Channing Lewis, Sophomore – Canton, OH/Canton McKinley
Channing Lewis won a pair of races and placed second in another two this weekend in two meets for Hartwick. On Saturday, in a 162-126 loss to SUNY Oneonta, she would begin the afternoon with a victory in the 1000 freestyle. Her time in the event was 11:18.67. She would also earn a win in the 500 free event with a time of 5:31.95. On Sunday, in a 200-91 loss to RPI, she finished second in the 1000 free (11:20.11) and the 200 back (2:21.73).
