Stevens Leads Commissioner Cup Standings after Fall Championships
After the completion of the 2017 Empire 8 fall season the conference office has released the current Commissioner’s Cup standings.
Stevens Institute of Technology leads the way with a .879 percentage, to rank .136 ahead of second place St. John Fisher College (.743%). Stevens had a strong showing across the board winning four conference titles throughout the fall. The Ducks won the men’s cross country title for the first time in program history, its tenth title in men’s soccer and its fifth title in women’s volleyball. The women’s soccer team took top honors for the fifth time as they were crowned co-champions with Hartwick College.
Fisher had seven top four finishes out of the nine fall conference sports. The Cardinals had its best finish at the cross country championship as the men tied its best overall finish in second place, while the women’s third place finish was a program high. Fisher finished third at the women’s golf championship and made post-season appearances in field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and women’s tennis.
Nazareth College ranks third in the standings with a .672 percent after winning the women’s tennis title for the first time since 2002. The Golden Flyers finished second in women’s volleyball and competed in the E8 semifinals in men’s and women’s soccer.
Utica College and Houghton College are separated by .005 percent. Utica won the women’s cross country title for the first time ever and returned to the field hockey tournament for the first time since 2014.
Houghton made its first appearance in the E8 tournament for women’s tennis and field hockey and placed fourth in both the men’s and women’s cross country championship.
Hartwick, Alfred University, Sage College and Elmira College complete the standings. The Hawks were named co-champions in women’s soccer for the first time, while Alfred qualified as the No. 4 seed in E8 tournament in volleyball and women’s soccer for the first time.
Sage is in its first year of Empire 8 competition and its highlight of the fall was the men’s soccer program finishing as runner-up in the E8 Tournament. Elmira’s fall highlight was a 20-win season by women’s volleyball and the Soaring Eagles had their best placement ever recorded at a cross country championship.
Commissioner Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 standings at the completion of the regular season and post-season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). A team's regular season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for the final total for that sport. Teams tied for a position in the regular season standings are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual amount of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine percentage.
