Don Sherman Named Elmira College's Assistant Athletic Director of Event & Facility Operations
ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Pat Thompson, Elmira College Vice President of Athletics, is pleased to announce the promotion of
Don Sherman to Assistant Athletic Director of Event & Facility Operations, after serving as the College's Director of Sports Information since 2013. Sherman replaces
Jerry Fisk, who has assumed the Director of Athletics & Recreation position at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
"Don has done a phenomenal job advancing every aspect of our Sports Information operation, and impacting our athletic programs' visibility and media coverage on local, regional and national stages," Thompson said. "His professionalism is unmatched, and he exhibits qualities for constant improvement and excellence that will transition effectively in his new role."
"I am truly grateful for the opportunity Vice President Pat Thompson has presented me with this promotion and I look forward to working with the talented student-athletes of Elmira College in this new capacity," Sherman said. "I've developed positive work relationships with so many of our staff members here in the Athletics Department, both on campus and at the Murray Athletic Center, which will ideally make for a smooth transition. It has been a pleasure serving as EC's first full-time Director of Sports Information over the last four-and-a-half years and I plan to bring the same positive attitude and energy to this new position."
As the Director of Sports Information, Sherman was responsible for publicizing each of Elmira's 19 varsity sports, maintaining the athletics website and enhancing the department's social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube with video and graphic design content. He also helped orchestrate a partnership with Stretch Internet that allows fans to view HD broadcasts of home athletic events at Campus Field, Speidel Gymnasium and the Murray Athletic Center. During the 2013-14 academic year, Sherman was tabbed the Paul Brand Staff Member of the Year, which is presented in recognition of one's positive impact upon the Elmira College athletic program, as well as the College in general, both on campus and in the community.
Sherman's first introduction to the EC Department of Athletics took place in 2009, when he began a two-year stint as an Assistant Coach for the Men's and Women's Tennis teams, alongside his work as a Sports Information Assistant. His résumé also includes previous stops at Division II Bloomsburg University as the Assistant Sports Information Director and as the Web/Media Manager for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the governing body of college tennis. At the ITA, Sherman was in charge of the national and regional rankings program, compiling polls for all three divisions of NCAA tennis, as well as NAIA and junior college.
Outside of the Office of Sports Information, the Elmira native has served on the ECAC Men's Lacrosse Championship committee and the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Regional Advisory Committee. He was also an NCAA site representative for the first and second rounds of the 2016 Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament, held at SUNY Cortland. He is currently a member of the Empire 8 Conference's branding/marketing committee and previously oversaw communications for the United Volleyball Conference, one of the nation's premier Division III men's volleyball leagues.
Sherman received his bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College, where he earned multiple Empire 8 All-Conference honors as a four-year member of the men's tennis team. He received his master's degree in Management from Elmira College in 2011.
