Mangone Named AFCA Regional Coach of the Year
WACO, TX. –
Jason Mangone joined an exclusive list of coaches Tuesday morning when the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) released their 2017 Regional Coaches of the Year. The association recognizes five coaches from each division of football (FBS, FCS, DII, DIII, NAIA), and Mangone was selected as the Region I Coach of the Year.
The five Division III selections are now finalists for AFCA Coach of the Year, which will be announced on Tuesday, January 9 during the AFCA convention. The awards show will be broadcasted live on the USA TODAY Sports Facebook page.
Mangone joins a list of high-profile names in 2017, including University of Georgia's Kirby Smart and Wisconsin's Paul Chryst. In the Division III subdivision, he's joined by Washington and Jefferson's Mike Sirianni, Berry College's Tony Kunczewski, Trine University's Troy Abbs, and Rick Willis of Wartburg College.
Coach Mangone led the Golden Eagle football program to an undefeated regular-season in 2017, and a trip to the NCAA Final Four this weekend where they'll face No. 1 University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. They've already surpassed school records with wins in a season, total offense, and scoring, making their deepest NCAA post-season run in program history.
He's amassed a record of 38-17 in his five years at the helm of the Golden Eagle football program, developing the team into a national contender.
Brockport's semifinal game will kickoff at 3:30 p.m. EST this weekend, and will be broadcasted on ESPN 3.
