USTFCCCA Honors Pitman as Athlete of the Week for Third Time
NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the third time during the indoor season, senior
Katherine Pitman of the Ithaca College women's track & field team has been named the national field athlete of the week by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The announcement was released on Tuesday morning.
At the Empire 8 Conference Championships on February 11 at Utica College, Pitman topped her own NCAA Division III record in the pole vault with a mark of 4.25 meters (13 feet, 11.25 inches) to win the event by nearly two feet.
Just a week prior to the conference meet, Pitman surpassed the national record by a centimeter inside Ithaca's Athletics and Events Center with a cleared height of 4.21 meters.
The Swampscott, Mass. native is now just two centimeters shy of setting the all-time pole vault record of 4.27 meters, which was set during the outdoor season by Cimran Virdi of MIT in 2015.
This is Pitman's third national athlete of the week honor of 2017, as she was selected last week (Feb. 7) and on January 17.
