Day Two Results
The second day of competition at the Empire 8 Conference Men's Swimming & Diving Championships has come to a close.
Less than one second separated the top three teams in the 200 Freestyle Relay. Stevens won for the fourth straight season, touching the wall in an NCAA B cut time of 1:23.55. Spenser Swanton, Matt Shaw, Matt Burk and Ethan Gehenio combined for the win. Ithaca's time of 1:24.16 earned second and Hartwick College took third (1:24.46).
For the first time since 2008 a Hartwick swimmer claimed the 400 individual medley. Senior Brendan Quinn, the 2016 runner-up, claimed the title in 2017 with a B cut time of 4:03.83 as he defeated Nazareth junior Alex Lapoint (4:07.60), the reining E8 champion. Stevens freshman Chris Rudel was third in 4:11.42.
The top two times in the 100 Butterfly finals tonight came from the Stevens Ducks. Vinny Tavoletti, last years runner-up, captured the conference crown in a time of 49.90, while Brennan Maxwell, the 2016 third place finisher, finished second in 50.48.
Ithaca senior Adam Zelehowsky won the 200 free for the third time in his career, previously winning in 2013 and 2014. Zelehowsky recorded a B-cut time of 1:40.18 in the finals, almost a full four seconds faster than Sam Fuller from Stevens (1:43.99).
For the first time a Utica diver claimed the 1-meter board event. Utica College freshman Matt Patton turned in the top score of 351.50. Nazareth junior Zachary Fink scored a 328.20 to place second and Hartwick freshm Kyle Washington (307.60) took third.
Ending the night was the 400 Medley Relay and Stevens won the title for the third straight year and fourth tiime in the last five years. The Duck quartet of Gehenio, Chris Ludeke, Tavoletti and Burk swam a time of 3:24.98. Ithaca finished in 3:26.56 and Alfred was third (3:30.07).
