Track & Field Wraps Up Day One at NYSCTC Championships

The nationally ranked No. 4 Ithaca College women's track & field team won three individual events to open up the NYSCTC Indoor Championships on Friday inside the Newell Field Hockey at St. Lawrence University. Ithaca owns a 40-point lead, with 91 points, heading into Saturday's jam-packed championship.

Junior Taryn Cordani highlighted the first day of competition with a school record performance in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:58.37 to place first and surpassed her own personal-best by more than four seconds.

Senior Katherine Pitman won the pole vault with a NYSCTC meet record and facility record mark of 4.15 meters (13 feet, 7.25 inches). Pitman broke her own NYSCTC record of 4.07 meters, and topped the facility mark by .55 meters.

Senior Brandy Smith blew away the field in the weight throw by two meters with a mark of 17.92 meters (58' 9.5"), while junior Caitlin Noonan was the runner-up at 15.93 meters (52' 3.25") and fellow senior Yvonne Palacios took third at 15.51 meters (50' 10.75").

The 4x200-meter relay squad of freshman Amanda Wetmore, senior Rose Paskoff, junior Amber Edwards and sophomore Reid Simoncini took second overall with a time of 1:48.56, which was just .42 seconds from first place.

Ithaca racked up three top eight finishes in the long jump as sophomore Gianna Folz placed third (5.07 meters – 16' 7.75"), freshman Caity Schmitz was sixth (4.94 meters – 16' 2.5") and sophomore Jordan Beckley finished seventh (4.92 meters – 16' 1.75").

Junior Denise Ibarra came in third in the 5K with a time of 17:46.80. Senior Amanda Zaput claimed fourth in the pole vault at 3.10 meters (10' 2").

Three Bombers competed in the pentathlon and placed third-to-fifth. Senior Natalie Meyer led the way in third with 2899 points as her best performance of 712 points came in the high jump with a mark of 1.58 meters (5' 2.25"). Junior Brianna Hayes was fourth at 2772 and her highest point total of 644 also came in the high jump at 1.52 meters (4' 11.75"). Freshman Elizabeth Gee notched 2632 points to finish in fifth and her best showing of 661 points came in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.28 seconds.

Ithaca's distance medley relay team of senior Kristin Lynn, sophomore Britney Swarthout, junior Alexis Kindig and freshman Sarah Rudge came in seventh with a time of 12:58.05.

In the preliminary events on Friday, Edwards was first in 60 hurdle prelims at 9.14 seconds, while sophomoreLusmer Quintana also took the top seed in the 6-meter dash at 8.01 seconds. Freshman Alexandria Rheaume clocked the fastest time in the 200-meter dash at 26.27 seconds.

Rheaume was qualified in second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.76 seconds, while Wetmore was in the 60 dash at 8.08 seconds, Folz was fourth in the 60 hurdles at 9.46 seconds and Beckley qualified in sixth in the 60 dash at 8.14 seconds.

ST. JOHN FISHER
Erica Pawlewicz finished runner up in the long jump with a distance of 5.08 meters.

Alyssa Mountain placed eighth in the 20-lb. weight throw, setting a new personal record of 14.2 meters. In the pole vault, Mary O'Brien took ninth at 2.95 meters, also a personal record.

The distance medley team of Norah Arnold, Lyons, Miller, and Rizzo qualified for ECACs, crossing finish in eighth place at 13:01.21.

NAZARETH
A first-place finish in the long jump by sophomore Alycia Atwell-Chwazik was among the highlights for Nazareth Friday as the Golden Flyers competed at the NYSCTC Track and Field Championships at St. Lawrence.

Competition resumes Saturday, but Atwell-Chwazik posted a winning leap of 5.22 meters (17 feet, 1 1/2 inches) to win by more than five inches over the runner-up.

Nazareth also finished fifth in the distance medley relasy (12:47.39) behind the foursome of Claire Ludington, Sarah Williams, Samantha Goble and Emily Thompson. Freshman Cassie Ellis was in eighth place in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:02.57 and will run in Saturday's final.


UTICA
Utica's Coralynn Maxwell (Newport, NY/West Canada Valley) and Brittany Charlonne(Rutland, MA/Wachusett) both broke the school-record in the women's Pentathlon. Maxwell placed 10th with 2525 points, while Charlonne placed 11th with 2517 points.

Utica's Anaelle Amy (Brooklyn, NY/Prospect Heights) qualified for Saturday's finals as she placed eighth in the 60 meter dash prelims with a personal best time of 8.21. Tiffany Evans(East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) qualified for the 400 meter dash finals with a seventh place time of 1:01.54 (personal-best).

ALFRED
First-year Megan Alper (Belmont, MA/Belmont) competed in the preliminary heats of the two spring events, taking 15th in the 60-meter dash (8.41 seconds) and 11th in the 200-meter dash (27.42 seconds).
 
First-year students Krissy Roberts (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango) and Danielle Perry (Leicester, NY/York) took 11th (4.79 meters) and 13th (4.76), respectively, in the long jump. Junior Brynn Hyde(Homer, NY/Homer) took 16th in the weight throw (13.40 meters).
 
Alper, first-year Allyson Cohen (Merrick, NY/JFK), Perry and Roberts took 10th in the 4x200-meter relay (1:56.26)
