Astel earns CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honors
GREENWOOD, Ind. (February 9, 2017) – Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball graduate student
Kaitlyn Astel was named First Team
Academic All-District Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honor is the second of Astel's career, as the Staten Island, New York native was previously recognized in 2015. The engineering management student was recognized out of District II, which encompasses players from seven states and Washington, D.C. Her placement on the All-District First team makes Astel eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-American Team, which will be released later this season.
To be considered for the award, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or key reserve.
"Kate is a dedicated student," said head coach
Megan Haughey. "She works extremely hard in the classroom."
In her addition to her success in the classroom, Astel continues to be a driving force for Stevens as the Ducks seek another Empire 8 Conference championship. She leads the team with 16.8 points per game, while playing 31.7 minutes per game over 20 games (19 starts). Her points per game total ranks second in the conference and her .436 field goal percentage paces the E8. Astel set a school record earlier in the season with a 36-point performance on Jan. 21 at Saint John Fisher.
Stevens begins its final road trip of the season tomorrow night with a matchup with Alfred University. Live stats and video links are available on StevensDucks.com.
