The teams competing down south and out west during their spring break were lucky to be away from the chill in the northeast. Even though games were postponed and rescheduled for slightly warmer days or venues there were still plenty of outstanding performances by the student-athletes. Baseball Player – St. John Fisher
Antony Mantova, Freshman, OF – Albany, NY/Colonie
In his six games played, Antony Mantova went 10-for-17 (.588) from the plate, hitting two doubles and smacking one homer. In the game against Suffolk on Friday, Mantova made it on base in all five of his at bats as he hit three singles, got hit by a pitch and walked. The freshman also collected four RBI on the week, while crossing the plate three times himself. In the outfield, Mantova was flawless as he recorded nine putouts and a fielding percentage of 1.000
Baseball Pitcher – Stevens
Zeph Walters, Senior – Diamond Bar, CA/Diamond Bar
Zeph Walters turned in a sterling performance in his first start of the season as Stevens downed #40 Johns Hopkins, 3-1. The senior right-hander scattered just two hits over seven innings, allowing one unearned run. He walked only two and struck out eight to earn his second victory of the season.
Softball Player – Nazareth
Meghan Barry, Senior, OF – Fulton, NY/John C Birdlebough
Meghan Barry was a key offensive contributor for Nazareth softball as the Golden Flyers opened the 2017 season with a 2-0 record. She went 6-of-7 (.857) with a double and three runs batted in. Barry went 3-for-4 with a walk in a 13-1 win over Centenary and then went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in an 18-1 win over Edgewood.
Softball Pitcher – St. John Fisher
Lindsey Thayer, Junior – Winthrop, NY/St. Lawrence
Lindsey Thayer of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team continued her dominance inside the circle last week as the junior pitcher posted a 4-2 record with a 0.25 earned run average and 62 strikeouts in 35.1 innings of work. Thayer defeated No. 11 WPI after allowing just two hits over seven innings with 13 strikeouts before throwing a complete-game shutout against Meredith College. Thayer took a loss to nationally-ranked Coe College despite giving up just one hit in a 1-0 game, but bounced back with 2.2 perfect innings as the No. 2 Cardinals defeated No. 11 WPI for the second time in three days. the junior tossed all 11.0 innings in a 1-0 win over Franklin College after scattering just three hits while striking out 14. For the season, Thayer is 5-2 with a 0.17 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 42.1 innings.
Men’s Lacrosse Player – Alfred
Jake Lynch, Junior, Attack – Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point
Junior attack Jake Lynch led the Saxons on the week in points with 11 from six assists and five goals. He recorded seven of his points against Shenandoah University from four assists and three goals. He had two goals and two assists in the Saxons’ win over The College at Wooster on the final day of Alfred University’s spring break training for four points. In both contests, Lynch managed to capitalize on a man-up advantage. He also recovered two ground balls in each event and caused one turnover on Saturday’s win against Wooster.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – St. John Fisher
Tanner Swan, Senior – Ridgewood, NJ/Loomis Chaffee
Tanner Swan played nearly all of the Cardinals three games this week, picking up two wins in the process. The senior allowed only 15 goals over the stint, posting a GAA of 5.18. Inn the final two games of the week, Swan recorded back-to-back 10 save performances.
Women’s Lacrosse Player – St. John Fisher
Jordan Johnson, Senior, Attack – Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua
Jordan Johnson recorded 17 points on the week, helping the Cardinals earn to convincing wins in Florida. The senior netted six goals in the season opener, while also helping out on four others to earn a career-high ten points. She then rivaled that game with a seven-point performance against Kenyon. Johnson also scooped up five groundballs on the week.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie – Stevens
Stephanie Schnelzer, Junior – Carmel, IN/Carmel
Stephanie Schnelzer recorded a career high 14 saves in the Ducks 12-8 win over Rowan. She faced a season high 33 shots in the win, and tallied a .636 save percentage in 60 minutes of work.
Men’s Tennis Player – Houghton
Michael Cha, Junior – Bowie, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt
Michael Cha picked up two wins at third singles to help Houghton go 1-1 on the week. Cha earned the lone point for the Highlanders on Wednesday against Roberts Wesleyan as he won 6-1, 7-6 (7-2). On Saturday, Houghton started conference play and Cha swept his opponent 6-0, 6-0.
