Spring sports are in full swing as most programs have been playing in the warmer climate of the south while on break. Those earning weekly awards for the week of Feb. 27 - March 5, 2017 include....

Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – St. John Fisher
Peter Girardi, Senior – Cicero,  NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
 
Peter Girardi was a standout at the ECAC Championships this past weekend, winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24. The senior also competed in the 400-meter dash in which he placed third overall, clocking in at 49.41.
 
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete – Utica
Clarence Skipper, Freshman – Albany, NY/Guilderland
 
Utica freshman Clarence Skipper broke the school-record in the triple jump and punched his ticket to NCAA's with a distance of 14.46 meters to earn a second place finish.
 
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Ithaca
Distance Medley Relay
 
The Bombers' distance medley relay team of junior Sierra Grazia, freshmen Alexandria Rheaume and Sarah Rudge, and junior Taryn Cordani won the event in a facility record-breaking time of 11:52.83 at the ECAC Championships, which was nearly six seconds faster than the runners-up from St. Lawrence University.
 
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Ithaca
Brandy Smith, Senior – Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades
 
Senior Brandy Smith won two field events at the ECAC Championships this past weekend. Smith won the shot put with a mark of 13.79 meters (45 feet, 3 inches) and then won the weight throw with a mark of 16.91 meters (55 feet, 5 ¾ inches), which was nearly a meter further than the runner-up.
 
Baseball Player – Houghton
Tage Johnson, Junior – Jamestown, NY/Frewsburg
 
Tage Johnson batted .393 (11-for-28) as Houghton finished 4-4 during a week in Florida. Johnson registered six RBIs, hit three doubles and one homerun. He also walked four times and scored 11 runs. During the eight game stretch he had three multi hit games including a 3-for-4 performance with four runs scored against Eastern University on March 2 and went 4-for-5 including his homerun against Delaware Valley on March 4.
 
Baseball Pitcher – Utica
Griffin Baur, Freshman – New York Mills, NY/New York Mills
 
Freshman hurler Griffin Baur did not disappoint in his debut as he struck out nine and did not allow a hit in four innings of work in the Pioneers' 13-0 win over Yeshiva in the season opener on Sunday.
 
Softball Player – St. John Fisher
Katie Mazierski, Junior, OF/2B – North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Wheatfield
 
Junior Katie Mazierski went a perfect 7-for-7 as Fisher opened its season on March 5 with two shutout wins over Emerson and St. Joseph’s. Against Emerson, Mazierski went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, as well as a stolen base. In game two the junior went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and three stolen bases.

Men’s Lacrosse Player – Ithaca
Jack Shumway, Senior, Attack – South Hadley, MA/Williston Northampton
 
Jack Shumway got off to a flying start to the 2017 campaign with 11 goals and one assist in helping fourth-ranked Ithaca to a 2-0 start to the season. He tallied six first-half goals in the Bombers 19-2 victory over Lycoming on Wednesday. The senior attacker recorded six points on five goals and one assist in the Bombers' 14-9 victory against 12th-ranked RPI on Sunday.
 
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – Hartwick
Connor O’Brien, Sophomore – Duxbury, MA/Duxbury
 
Connor O’Brien made 22 saves in two wins for Hartwick this past week. He made nine saves while allowing only five in a 6-5 win over Oswego in the team’s season opener on Wednesday. He then made 13 stops in an 11-10 victory at MIT, making seven saves in the second quarter alone. For the week, O’Brien registered a goals against average of 7.50. He also contributed four ground balls and a caused turnover.
 
Women’s Lacrosse Player – Ithaca
Ally Runyon, Graduate, Attack – Fairport, NY/Fairport
 
Ally Runyon helped 19th-ranked Ithaca improve to 2-0 on the season with a 16-6 win at St. Lawrence. The attacker registered eight points on seven goals and one assist in the dominant win.
 
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie – Stevens
Stephanie Schnelzer, Junior – Carmel, IN/Carmel
 
Stephanie Schnelzer converted seven saves in 60 minutes of action Wednesday in a 13-3 win over in-state rival Montclair St. Schnelzer allowed just one goal in the first half to allow the Ducks to build a 6-1 lead, before allowing just two more over the remainder of regulation to dismantle any hopes of a Montclair comeback.
 
Men’s Tennis Player – Elmira
Theo Tran, Freshman – Houston, TX/IMG Academy
 
Theo Tran picked up two key wins for Elmira at the top singles and doubles positions to guide the Soaring Eagles to a 7-2 redemption win over Oswego State. Tran teamed up with Patrick Tracey for a dominant 8-0 win in doubles, before rallying from a set down to clinch his first collegiate singles victory in a super tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2).
