Athletes of the Week: April 3-9, 2017
Just a few weeks remain in the spring regular season and the weather is finally warming up, which is good as there are still plenty of games to be played as teams compete for a spot in the postseason tournaments. Baseball Player – St. John Fisher
Ryan Fahy, Junior, OF – Herkimer, NY/Herkimer
Ryan Fahy played a big role in helping the Cardinals win all four of their games last week. In four starts, Fahy went 7-for-16 (.438) at the plate and slugged .750, extending his hit streak to six games. The junior outfielder had two doubles and one home run in all to go along with six runs scored, six RBI and two walks. On Wednesday, against RIT, Fahy went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. He hit the game-tying homer in the eighth inning before plating the go-ahead RBI in the 10th inning with a sacrifice fly. Over the weekend, in a sweep of St. Lawrence, Fahy collected five more hits and four more RBI. Saturday, he went 1-for-4 with a double before notching two hits and two RBI in each game of a Sunday doubleheader.
Baseball Pitcher – St. John Fisher
Kyle Chambers, Sophomore – Queensbury, NY/Queensbury
Kyle Chambers won one game and saved another as the Cardinals closed out last week with four wins. Chambers, who pitched solely in relief, made three appearances and tossed five innings. He did not surrender a run and scattered just three hits while tallying nine strikeouts. Against RIT on Wednesday, Chambers earned the win in relief after pitching three scoreless innings. He capped the week with two scoreless innings against St. Lawrence. On Saturday, he struck out the side and later picked up his first career save in the opening end of a doubleheader against the Saints on Sunday. In that game, Chambers also struck out the side.
Softball Player – St. John Fisher
Sarah Kubik, Sophomore, 1B – Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park
Sarah Kubik helped lead the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team to three wins last as the Cardinals swept RIT in a non-conference doubleheader before splitting with Ithaca College on Sunday. Over four games, Kubik hit 6-for-11 (.545) and slugged .909 with a double and a home run. Kubik also scored three runs, drove in three and walked three times. Against RIT, Kubik had two hits in six at-bats along with two walks before coming away with four hits in five at-bats in a conference doubleheader at Ithaca. Kubik went 1-for-2 with two sacrifices in the opening game before going 3-for-3 with three RBI, a home run two runs scored and a walk in the night cap.
Softball Pitcher – Houghton
Kaylee Jentsch, Sopohomre – Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park
Kaylee Jentsch pitched two complete games, including her first career no-hitter in the Highlanders' 5-1 win over #22 Stevens. Jentsch went seven innings with six strikeouts and four walks while allowing just one run against the Ducks. She also helped her cause by driving in two runs with her first career home run. Earlier in the week, she struck out four and walked just one in a 5-2 complete game loss to Ithaca.
Men’s Lacrosse Player – Utica
Dominic Castiglia, Sophomore, Attack – Liverpool, NY/Liverpool
Dominic Castiglia netted 10 goals and one assist in the Pioneers’ two victories last week. He posted a career-high eight goals in the win against Alfred State on Wednesday and then scored two goals and assisted on the game winning goal against Alfred University on Saturday.
Men’s Lacrosse Goalie – Elmira
Cameron Prior, Senior – Malden, MA/Malden Catholic
Cameron Prior amassed 54 saves in a pair of games last weekend for the Soaring Eagles and scored his first career goal. He stopped 23 shots against The College at Brockport, before racking up a season-high 31 saves against Hartwick. Prior produced some offense for the Purple and Gold, as the senior netminder scored from 45 yards out to collect his first career tally.
Women’s Lacrosse Player – St. John Fisher
Jordan Johnson, Senior, Attack – Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua
Jordan Johnson posted 12 points over the week, helping the Cardinals secure two wins. In a rainy bout with Buffalo State, the senior notched a hat trick and assisted on three others. Johnson then made her way into the Fisher history books during the Saturday tilt against Houghton. The Canandaigua native assisted on four goals with the first dime giving her the title of St. John Fisher College career assists leader.
Women’s Lacrosse Goalie – Hartwick
Carleigh Tarala, Sophomore – Tully, NY/Tully
Carleigh Tarala improved to 3-1 on the year this past week in backstopping the Hawks to a 10-5 win over Elmira. The sophomore made a season-high 13 saves as Hartwick won its third straight game.
Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete – St. John Fisher
Peter Girardi, Junior – Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
Peter Girardi is seeing a successful start to his outdoor track campaign, as he broke his own personal record, the Fisher record, the facility record, and the meet record in the 400-meter dash, finishing in first place out of 69 competitors with an ECAC qualifying time of 48.16, nearly a whole second faster than the runner up. In the 200-meter dash, Girardi took third place with an ECAC qualifying time of 22.10.
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Utica
Jordan Smith, Sophomore – Tolland, CT/ Tolland
Sophomore Jordan Smith broke the school-record in the javelin throw, winning with his career-best mark of 57.40 meters at the ROC City Classic, which was 3.23 meters further than the runner-up. Smith set the previous record last year, at 56.00 meters. He also competed in the shot put event, throwing a mark of 9.25 meters.
Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete – Ithaca
Alexandria Rheaume, Senior – Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley
Freshman Alexandria Rheaume took first overall in the 200-meter dash at 25.54 seconds at the Coach P Invitational on Saturday at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.
Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Emily Soeder, Junior – Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker
Emily Soeder tied her own school outdoor record with a first-place finish in the high jump at the Naz/Roc City Classic Sunday. She cleared 1.62 meters (5 feet, 3 3/4 inches) which was .05 meters (2 inches) higher than the second-place finisher.
Men’s Tennis Player – Nazareth
Lamar Hurt, Sophomore – New York, NY/ Louis D. Brandeis
Lamar Hurt had a strong week to help Nazareth earn three conference wins. He went 2-1 at first singles and 3-0 at first doubles. His lone singles loss came 6-1, 1-6, 5-7 to Kevin Volz from Alfred. He won his other singles matches 6-3, 6-1 (Utica) and 6-2, 7-5 (Elmira). Doubles match scores were 8-6 (Alfred), 8-3 (Utica) and 8-7 (7-4) against Elmira.
Men’s Golf Player – Moravian
Joe Rochelle, Sophomore – Quakertown, PA/Quakertown
Rochelle led the Greyhounds as the squad finally played its first full round of the spring at the Moravian Spring Invitational on the Par 71 Southmoore Golf Course. Rochelle carded a round of 78 that included two birdies and eight pars as he finished in a tie for tenth of the 37 golfers. Moravian was third of the seven teams.
