Fisher Maintains Lead; Smith Shoots Low Round

  The Moravian College golf team turned in the best team round of the day with a 317 as the Greyhounds remained in third place after the first spring and third overall round of the 2016-17 Empire 8 Conference Championships played at the Hershey Country Club Friday.

The Hounds' 317 gives the squad a 54-hole team score of 967, moving within eight strokes of second place Stevens Institute of Technology, which has a 959. St. John Fisher College holds down the top spot after three rounds with a 929-team score.

The winner, which will be crowned on Saturday will earn the Conference's automatic bid to the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Tournament.

Moravian junior Tyler Smith turned in the lowest card of all of the golfers in the tournament in the third round a three-over par round of 74 on Friday that included one birdie and 13 pars. Smith finished three strokes ahead of the field in the third round and has a 54-hole total of 228, just one stroke off of the leader Karl Deuble of St. John Fisher heading into Saturday's final round.

Scranton senior Tyler Huggins shot a 6-over-par 77 to help The Royal's hold their spot in fourth place.

Huggins' 77 was tied for the second-lowest score of the day and gives him a three-round total of 239, which is 24-over par and good for sixth place overall. Huggins shot rounds of 79-83 in the first two rounds of the championship during the fall season.

Stevens Institute of Technology Frank Szucs and Fisher's Mike Long each fired a 78 in the third round. Szucs is currently third in the overall standings with a 230, while Long did not compete in the fall portion of the championship.

Scranton senior Dan Leppert and Stevens' Jack Doherty tied for sixth on Friday with a round of 79. Leppert carded a pair of birdies and eight pars, while Doherty had one birdie and nine pars. 

The teams will be back on the course tomorrow competiting in the final leg of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament.
