Fisher Wins Seventh Straight - Cardinals Claim E8 Title

The St. John Fisher College men's golf team won the Empire 8 Conference Championship for the seventh straight year on Saturday at the Hershey Golf Country Club in Pennsylvania. With the win, Fisher earns the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.
The Cardinals shot a combined 321 in Saturday's final round to finish with a four-round total of 1250, defeating runner-up Stevens Institute of Technology, who closed out with a final score of 1285. Moravian College finished in third place at 1292.
Stevens' senior
Frank Szucs shot a 76 on Saturday, finishing with a four-round total of 306 (75-77-78-76). Szucs was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year, marking the first time a Stevens athlete has earned the honor.
Fisher's Karl Deuble, Jeff Palmerino and
Joel Jakubowicz were each named First-Team All-Conference while
Nicholas Calabrese earned a spot on the Second Team.
Palmerino, who tied for second place on the overall leaderboard, turned in a 77 on the final round to finish the spring championship in third place with a two-day total of 158. Deuble finished the spring championship in a four-way tie for fifth place after shooting an 83 on Saturday. Deuble finished the four-round championship tied for second place on the individual leaderboard at 24 (74-76-77-83).
Fisher's
Colin McGaugh was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. The freshman finished the tournament with a 330 (83-81-85-81).
The Greyhounds had two All-Conference honorees with junior Tyler Smith finishing fourth overall with a 314 to earn a spot on the Empire 8 All-Conference First Team after being on the Second Team the last two years. Smith was also the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year in 2015. Sophomore Kody Long placed sixth in the tournament with a 320 for a spot on the All-Conference Second Team.
Long would turn in the low card of the final round with a two-over par 73 that included three birdies and 11 pars and helped Long move from a tie for 11th to sixth place overall. Smith, who had entered the day in second and one stroke off of the lead, battled a nagging injury and had five pars on the way to a round of 86 for his fourth place showing.
Moravian senior Tyler Huggins shot 83 on Saturday and finished with rounds of 79-83-77-83 – 322, good for eighth place overall, the best showing by a Royal in the championship. Sophomore Kyle Hayes shot 80 for the second straight day and finished the championship with rounds of 83-83-80-80 – 326, good for ninth. Both Huggins and Hayes earned second-team all-conference honors with their performances. It marks the fourth time in the past six season the Royals have had two players finish in the top 10.
