Utica Repeats as E8 Champs!

ROCHESTER, NY – The Utica College men's track and field team won its second straight Empire 8 Conference Outdoor Championship on Saturday as the Pioneers posted 147 team points and edged second place Stevens (131 points).
Utica's
Nicodemus Gambill played a part in 30 team points for the Pioneers and was named the Empire 8 Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet. Gambill tied his own meet record and broke the facility record as he posted a time of 10.57 in the 100 meter dash to take first place in the finals. Gambill also broke his own meet record and set a new facility record as he posted a time of 21.68 to take home the 200 meter dash title. Gambill joined
Christian St. Amour,
Kevin Gangemi and
Ka'Sean Watlington in the men's 4x100 meter relay as they claimed first place while breaking the meet and facility record with a time of 42.08. The previous meet record was set in 2009 (42.20).
St. John Fisher College's
Mark VanMarter was tabbed as the Field Athlete of the Meet. He took first in the long jump with an ECAC qualifying jump of 7.01 meters, and finished first in the high jump with a height of 1.80 meters. The junior also competed in the triple jump where he set a new school record and personal record with the 16th best jump in the nation, taking second place. His time passed the meet record and qualified for ECACs at 14.35 meters.
Utica's
Tyler Wright took home the Empire 8 crown in the 3000 meter steeplechase for the second straight year as he posted a time of 9:31.36.
UC's
Clarence Skipper set a new meet and facility record as he won the triple jump with a distance of 14.41 meters.
Jude Manford won his first E8 title in the men's discus as he eclipsed the ECAC standard with a personal best toss of 45.16 meters.
Brenden Moore, Nick Proper,
Erik Gleba and
Kevin Gangemi placed second in the 4x400 meter relay with a season best time of 3:21.18 for UC.
Utica's
Mitchell Marlow continued his outstanding freshman campaign with a personal best time of 4:02.29 in the men's 1500 meter run to place second.
Stevens freshman
Dalton Newman won the javelin throw with a distance of 52.80 meters. He reached the mark in his final attempt. Junior
Tanner Lyons placed second (51.51 meters) and freshman
Ryan Locke (51.08 meters) as the Ducks swept the top-three spots.
Senior
Neil Forrester's shot put of 15.81 meters broke his own meet record set in 2016. The senior reached the distance in his fifth attempt.
Sam Kaczmarek placed third in the men's shot put with a distance of 13.75 meters.
Ithaca senior
Larry Cass blew past the hammer throw field with a mark of 54.24 meters (177 feet, 11 inches) to set a new Empire 8 meet record by .01 meters. Cass finished nearly five meters farther than the runner-up Utica's
Sam Bonk with a throw of 49.32 meters.
Fisher's
Peter Girardi took first place in the 400-dash posting the second fastest time in the national all while breaking the Fisher record, meet record, personal record, and qualifying for ECACs with a time of 47.35. The previous meet record of 48.79 was set in 2007 by Brandon Wheeler of Nazareth.
The junior would take first place again in the 400-hurdles, finishing with an ECAC mark of 53.66.
The highlight Houghton came in the 800m, where
Cory McCarty won the event for the second year in a row wtih a time of 1:54.87, thanks to a sensational final lap.
Stevens senior
Nicholas Zickgraff finished first in the 1500 with a time of 4:01.14.
Eddie Mahana placed first overall posting the 23rd fastest time in the nation and fourth-fastest by a freshman in the 110-meter hurdles, and qualified for the ECAC championship with a personal record time of 14.86. The freshman would then take second in the 400-hurdles just behind Girardi at an ECAC mark of 55.71.
In the 5K,
Charles Collins and
Mac Milligan highlighted the event; Collins coming in first setting a Fisher record and personal record time of 15:05.49, just one second off the facility record. Just five seconds behind was Milligan at a personal record of 15:10.85.
Alfred first year
Sean Foley won the pole vault with an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) qualifying height of 4.30 meters. The new mark is also a personal best for Foley.
