Ithaca Opens Empire 8 Play With 9-0 Sweep of Elmira

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's tennis team opened Empire 8 Conference play on Saturday afternoon, making the short trip down Route 13 to face Elmira College at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome. The Bombers blew past the Soaring Eagles for a 9-0 victory to improve to 5-3 overall.
IC began the day with two points already in the pocket, as Elmira was unable to field a third doubles team and a sixth-flight singles entrant.
Garrett Boleslav and
Liam Spiegel received the forfeit at third doubles, while
Sam McGrath picked up the forfeit the concession in singles.
Ithaca added two more points during the doubles portion of play. McGrath and Nathan Wolf scored an 8-2 victory over Elmira's Yaniv Kogan and Anthony Colavito in the top flight.
Max Prestwich and
Stefan Lazarevic picked up an 8-3 triumph over the Soaring Eagles' Patrick Tracey and Stephen Gervase in the middle flight.
The Bombers clinched the match in their favor, as Boleslav defeated Jordan Curtis with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash win in the fifth flight.
Liam Spiegel followed for IC with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Gervase in the fourth flight.
The top three flights also went Ithaca's way.
Colten Lavery made quick work of Colavito in the top flight, besting the Soaring Eagles top netter 6-1, 6-2. Lazarevic downed EC's Kogan 6-4, 6-1 in the third flight. Ithaca's closest match of the day came in the second flight, as Wolf and Tracey battled in a match that went three sets. Wolf dropped the opening set 3-6, but rallied for a 6-2 win in the middle frame. Wolf gained the early edge in the third-set super-breaker, rolling to a 10-5 win.
The win improved Ithaca's record to 29-0 all-time against Elmira. Ithaca returns to action on Wednesday, April 5, with a 4:00 p.m. home contest against Houghton College.
