Fisher Upends Mustangs in NCAA Opening Round
YORK, Pa. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team came out victorious in its NCAA Division III Championship opening round match up, defeating Morrisville State 19-6. With the win, the Cardinals improve their record to 15-4 on the year and earn their way to the second round, matching the farthest any team has gotten in program history.
Fisher picked off right where it left off, overwhelming the opponents defense with a barrage of first half offense. Just under three minutes in and the Cardinals found themselves up 3-0 courtesy of two goals from
Mackenzie LeVan and one from
Cori Holbrook. The Mustangs stopped the bleeding momentarily with one of their own, but Fisher quickly retaliated. Starting at the 23:53 mark, over the next 15:41 the Cardinal and Gold netted six unanswered to give them a healthy, 9-1, lead. Morrisville bounced back with four of the next five tallies but Fisher carried a 10-5 lead into the intermission.
The second half was dominated by the Cardinals as they cashed in another nine goals while holding Morrisville to just one.
Jordan Johnson turned in a tremendous score sheet, scoring six goals and assisting on five others. The senior now has 110 points on the year (56 goals, 54 assists), setting a new program record for single season points.
Also aiding in the offense was LeVan, whose four goals tied her career record.
Kelsie Schindler,
Morgan Young and Holbrook all recorded multiple goal games as each came away with two. Rounding out the scoring was
Jamie Wallace,
Maria Hristodoulou and
Olivia Marziale, who each nabbed one.
On the restart, both
Claire Bollin and
Molly Tice performed well as each controlled four draws. Bollin also collected a team-high four groundballs.
Morgan Hayes kept her career record clean (7-0) as she saved a single Mustang shot in 44:35 minutes of play.
Molly Maguire came in to relieve her at the 15:25 mark, stopping one shot as well.
Women's lacrosse now sets its sights on York College, who the squad will see in the next round of NCAA action. That contest is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. and will be played at York's Kingsley Field.
