There were some great performances last week as the Empire 8 crowned its Baseball champion and track and field athletes competed in last chance meets. Those earning weekly honors for the week of May 8-14, 2017 include....

Baseball Player – Ithaca
Ryan Henchey, Senior, 3B – Rensselaer, NY/Columbia
 
Ryan Henchey hit .364 (4-for-11) with a double, three runs scores and three RBI in a 3-0 week for the Bombers as he was named the Empire 8 Tournament MVP. He opened the tournament going 2-for-4, including the game winning two-run double down the left field line to propel Ithaca, 4-3, over Elmira. In the Championship game he finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. On the field, Henchey totaled eight assists, one putout and was involved in one double play in the tournament.
 
Baseball Pitcher – Ithaca
Jake Binder, Sophomore – Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt
 
Jake Binder tossed a complete game against Stevens as Ithaca won 4-1. Binder scattered six hits, walked one and struck out a pair.
 
Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete – St. John Fisher
Peter Girardi, Junior – Cicero, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse
 
Peter Girardi competed at the Cardinal Last Chance Meet, where he posted a new facility record at Polisseni Track and Field Complex in the 400-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time of 48.34.
 
Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Ithaca
Larry Cass, Senior – Weston, CT/Weston
 
Senior Larry Cass finished second in the hammer throw at the Cardinals Last Chance Meet with a personal best mark of 55.56 meters (182 feet, 3 inches). Cass reached that distance on his final attempt of the meet after posting five marks between 52.05 and 54.88 meters.
 
Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete – Ithaca
Sierra Grazia, Junior – Sherman, CT/New Milford
 
Junior Sierra Grazia secured top honors in the 1,500 meter-run at the Cardinals Last Chance Meet hosted by St. John Fisher College. Grazia posted a time of 4:39.88 to finish almost a full seven seconds ahead of the runner-up.
 
Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Alycia Atwell-Chwazik, Sophomore – Remsen, NY/Remsen
 
Sophomore Alycia Atwell-Chwazik used a personal-best leap to place first in the triple jump at the Cardinal Last Chance Meet at St. John Fisher. Atwell-Chwazik jumped 11.26 meters or 36 feet, 11 1/2 inches to win the even by a significant margin. She also finished second in the long jump at 5/30 meters (17 feet, 4 3/4 inches).
