Last Minute Goal Sinks Fisher in NCAA Second Round
YORK, Pa. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team concluded its season today as it fell, 5-4, to York College Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship. Fisher ends its year with a record of 15-5 and tie the farthest its ever gotten in the National Tournament (2009, 2012).
The Spartans got off to a quick start, netting two in the first three minutes. Fisher was able to answer though, beginning with a free-position goal from
Claire Bollin at the 15:54 mark. Just over two minutes later, the Cardinals were able to tie it up courtesy of a tally from
Maria Hristodoulou. York would net one more before the half time whistle though and Fisher entered the half trailing, 3-2.
In the second half, York increased its lead to two goals, scoring 3:22 into the stanza. Fisher's
Jordan Johnson narrowed the deficit to one once again as she cashed in her 57th goal of the season.
The two sides were unable to gain an inch on each other for a while, that is until
Cori Holbrook found the back of the net with 7:21 in regulation, knotting it up at 4-4.
With overtime looming, Fisher received a yellow card thus giving the Spartans a man-up opportunity. York's Meghan Fox took advantage of the situation, punching one in with just 20 ticks left on the clock. The Spartans would control the ensuing draw and seal the win.
Despite the loss, Fisher outshot York 18-10.
Morgan Hayes picked up five saves for the Cardinals in the process.
