Girardi Moves On To Finals at NCAAs

Geneva, Ohio - All four male Empire 8 track and field athletes competed today at the NCAA DIII Track and Field championships, hosted at the Spire Institute by Mount Union College.

St. John Fisher College's Peter Girardi advanced to the finals in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing first in his heat with a time of 51.62. He will go into the finals as the second seed just four-tenths behind the leader.

Fisher's Mark VanMarter finished 16th among competitors with a jump of 6.83 meters.

Utica College's Nicodemus Gambill finished in 13th place in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash as he clocked a time of of 21.85. Gambill did not qualify for Saturday's finals in the event, missing the cut off by .27 of a second. 

Alfred University's Seth Spicer is in 12th place out of 20 competitors after the first five events of the decathlon with 3273 points.  His top-scoring event was the final event of the day, the 400-meter dash. Spicer busted out a personal record of 50.50 seconds as he finished sixth overall and scored 792 points to jump a handful of spots up the leader board. 

Spicer neared 700 points during Thursday's opening event, the 100-meter dash. He scored 681 points when he ran an 11.85. He scored 632 points in the third event, the shot put. Spicer threw 12.42 meters (40'-9"). His long jump (6.10 meters) and his high jump (1.72 meters) scored 608 and 560 points, respectively.

FRIDAY ACTION
Girardi will compete in the 110-hurdles prelims beginning at 2:30 p.m. Nicodemus will be back on the track for the 100 meter dash prelims at 3:30 p.m.
