Thayer, Mazierski and Thompson named All-American
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its
Division III All-American teams Wednesday evening, May 24 and three Empire 8 softball players have been named All-Americans.
St. John Fisher College pitcher Lindsay Thayer was named to the First Team, while teammate Katie Mazierski and Alfred University Liz Thompson were named to the Second Team.
Thayer, who was named the Most Outstanding Player in both the NCAA Regional and Super Regional rounds, has posted a 28-5 record in the circle to date. Thayer, who has been nearly unhittable all season, currently leads the nation in strikeouts (415), strikeouts per seven innings (14.6) and earned run average (0.42). This season's Empire 8 and ECAC Pitcher of the Year, Thayer has held opposing hitters to a miniscule .108 batting average while yielding just 73 hits in 202.1 innings of work. In 34 appearances this season, she has thrown 23 complete games including a no-hitter and a perfect game in the same week.
Thayer has pitched 24 games without surrendering an earned run in 2017 and has notched 12 games with at least 15 strikeouts including a 21-strikeout performance in which she tied the NCAA record for most strikeouts in a seven inning contest.
Mazierski leads the team and ranks among the national leaders with a .462 batting average over 43 games played. The junior infielder owns a .516 on-base percentage and has accumulated 17 multi-hits games so far including six games with at least three hits. To date, Mazierski, who was named the Empire 8 Conference's Player of the Year, has accounted for a team-leading 61 hits and 40 runs scored while her 14 stolen bases is tied for the most on the team.
Mazierski has played well in the field after making just four errors in 84 chances for a .955 fielding percentage.
Fisher, which is ranked eighth in the latest NFCA national poll, will take on Williams College at 6:30 p.m. (Central Standard Time) on Thursday, May 25 in the Division III World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Thompson started all 38 games at third base for the Saxons and batted .415 with 49 hits (including 13 home runs and 10 doubles), 52 runs and 33 RBIs. She also stole a school single-season record 28 bases (in 31 tries), including a single-game record five against Elmira on April 9. Her slugging percentage (.847) led the Empire 8, while her .521 on-base percentage ranked third in the conference. She played a stellar third base for the Saxons, logging a .958 fielding percentage, with just five errors in 119 chances. In 14 Empire 8 games, she had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with no errors in 45 chances (14 putouts, 31 assists).
She set new school career records this season in home runs (34), RBIs (127), hits (192) and stolen bases (68).
