ECAC Weekly Honors for FIve E8 Athletes

The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) has announced the Corvias Players of the Week for the week of play ending April 30 and five Empire 8 student-athletes have been recognized.
 
Baseball – North
Rookie of the Week
Anthony Brophy – St. John Fisher College, Fr., P

 
Brophy picked up his eighth win of the season last week as the freshman hurled seven scoreless innings in a win over Stevens. Brophy allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high 14 batters in the win.
 
Softball – North
Pitcher of the Week
Lindsey Thayer – St. John Fisher College, Jr., P

 
Thayer went 4-0 last week as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team extended its winning streak to 14 games after going 6-0 on the week. Thayer combined to post a 0.33 earned run average after allowing just one run in 21.0 innings of work. She struck out 49 and surrendered just nine hits in all while opposing hitters batted a paltry .123 against her. Thayer collected both wins in a doubleheader against Rochester on Tuesday with 27 total strikeouts before throwing back-to-back complete games against Brockport and Utica College, respectively.
 
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field- North
Track Athlete of the Week
Kevin Dixon – Alfred University, Sr.

 
Dixon set a school-record in the 3,000-meter run when he hit a huge personal best of 9:00.12. He broke his personal best by 45.54 seconds and defeated all other runners by 1:19.28 or more while competing at the Bloomsburg University Maroon and Gold Invitational on Saturday. In his race, he defeated four runners from Wilkes University and one from Division II Bloomsburg University.
 
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field – North
Track Athlete of the Week
Taryn Cordani – Ithaca College, Jr.

 
Cordani took second overall at the Penn Relays last Friday in the 10,000-meter run in 34:27.37 to shatter the previous school record of 35:14.40 set in 1984. Cordani only followed a runner from the University of Connecticut, and beat out the next closest Division III entry by 42 seconds. She now ranks first nationally by .23 seconds.
 
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field – North
Field Athlete of the Week
Katherine Pitman – Ithaca College, Sr.

 
Pitman won the pole vault in the women's college division at the Penn Relays on Friday and topped a field of seven NCAA Division I athletes and another from a Canadian institution with a mark of 4.10 meters (13 feet, 5.25 inches). Pitman was tied with an athlete from the University of Oklahoma but took the top spot due to total attempts. She then re-established her national best mark on Sunday at Cornell, winning the event at 4.15 meters.
