The St. John Fisher College men's golf team currently sits in first place after recording a team score of +6 on Saturday at the opening round of the 2017-18 Empire 8 Men's Golf Fall Championship at Kanon Valley Country Club.

The first two rounds of the Empire 8 Championship will be played in the fall season, while the final two rounds will be played in the spring.  The winning team will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Cardinals, who have won the Empire 8 Championship in each of the last seven seasons, hold a 16-stroke lead over Stevens Institute of Technology which finished its round at +22.  SUNY Oswego sits in third place at +23 while Utica College (+28) and SUNY Potsdam (+37) rounded out the top five.

As a team, Fisher tallied 18 birdies and recorded one eagle overall.  The Cardinals very well on par fives with an average mark of 4.67.

Nicholas Calabrese and Colin McGaugh are tied for the lead through 18 holes after shooting one-under-par on the day with a 71.

Stevens junior Jack Doherty shot an even-par 72 to lead the Stevens. The single-round score was Doherty's career-low single-round total.  Doherty is tied for third with Utica's Josh Kienz. The four golfers at the top of the leaderboard were the only competitors to fire par or better.

Fisher's Michael Long sits in a two-way tie with Oswego's Corey Marshall for fifth place with an opening round 75 (+3).

Teams will head back out to the course on Sunday morning with 18 more holes.
