The Empire 8 Athletic Conference has announced that 12 student-athletes in seven different sports have been recognized for outstanding play during the week of January 22-28, 2018.... 

Men’s Basketball Player – Alfred
Sage Brown, Junior, Guard/Forward – Cortland, NY/Cortland
 
Junior Sage Brown shot 68.8% from the floor, making 11-of-16 attempts and tacked on 5-of-9 free throws for a career-high 27 points in the win over Elmira College. Saturday’s game was his fifth game in a row of double-digit scoring. It was also his second game in a row with a double-double as he pulled down 13 rebounds, also making it his sixth game this season with a double-double. Brown finished the day with five assists and one steal.
 
Men’s Basketball Rookie – Hartwick
Kevin Townes, Freshman, Guard – Lagrangeville, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes
 
Kevin Townes averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in a pair of contests for the Hawks. He shot 41% (14-of-34) from the floor, 40% (6-of-15) from three-point range, and 88% (7-of-8) from the free-throw line on the week. On Thursday, Townes scored a game-high 18 points and tied for a game-best 11 rebounds in a win over Elmira. On Saturday, he scored a team-high 23 points, hit four three-pointers, and tied for a game-high with eight rebounds in a loss at Stevens.
 
Women’s Basketball Player – Sage
Genevieve Schoff, Senior, Forward – Little Falls, NY/Little Falls
 
Genevieve Schoff averaged 24.3 points per game, shot 53.3 percent from the floor and eclipsed 1,300 career points in a 1-2 week for Sage. She also averaged 10.3 rebounds and 3.75 blocks per game. Schoff tallied a personal-best 36 points against Stevens, grabbed 12 rebounds and tied the Sage single-game free throw record against Stevens with 18 made. The 18 free throws in a game breaks the Empire 8 record of 17 made back in 2001. On Friday against St. John Fisher College she finished with 17 points, 10 boards and six blocks and then capped the week with 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks against Nazareth Saturday.
 
Women’s Basketball Rookie – Stevens
Maddi Hahn, Freshman, Guard/Forward – Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional
 
Maddi Hahn averaged 15.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in two games for the Ducks while playing 42 minutes on the week. She finished with 17 points against Sage on Tuesday evening and chipped in with 14 points on 6-of-8 (75%) from the field against Hartwick on Saturday.
 
Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Nazareth
Seth Farrand, Freshman – Franklinville, NY/Franklinville
 
Seth Farrand helped the Nazareth men cap an undefeated season, 8-0 in dual meets, after the Golden Flyers defeated RIT 164-136 Saturday. Farrand took the 50- and 100-yard freestyles as well as the 100-yard backstroke. He was clocked in ;22.15 in the 50 free, :47.65 in the 100 free and :53.51 in the 100 back. He also anchored the 200-free relay that Nazareth won in 1:27.18.
 
Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete – Nazareth
Taylor Robey, Freshman – Hurley, NY/Kingston
 
Taylor Robey won all three of her individual freestyle events and anchored the winning 200 free relay Saturday, as Nazareth fell 174-124 to RIT. She went :25.24 to take the 50 free, :55.52 to win the 100 free and 2:01.98 to take the 200. In the relay, Nazareth posted a winning time of 1:42.07.
 
Women’s Indoor Track Athlete – Stevens
Gina Dello Russo, Sophomore – Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park
 
Gina Dello Russo was a part of two school records at the Dr. Sander Invitational. Dello Russo was part of the distance medley relay that posted the second-fastest time in Division III this year with a 12:06.76 and a split in the 400-meter leg of 56.117. The then won the 200 over 73 other entrants as the only person to break 26 seconds (25.99), setting a school record in the process.
 
Women’s Indoor Field Athlete – Nazareth
Alycia Eaton, Junior – Remsen, NY/Remsen
 
Alycia Eaton finished second in the long jump, posting 5.44 meters (17 feet, 10 ¼ inches) at the Brockport Invitational Saturday.
 
Men’s Indoor Track Athlete – Stevens
PJ Gunther, Freshman – Sayville, NY/Sayville
 
PJ Gunther won the 3,000 meters over 40 other runners as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's track & field team competed at the John Covert Classic on Saturday. His time of 9:02.56 was a new personal best in the event and edged out the runner-up by .13 seconds.
 
Men’s Indoor Field Athlete – Utica
Kyle Swiecki, Junior - Boonville, NY/Adirondack
 
Utica's Kyle Swiecki set a new school-record in the men's heptathlon with a score of 4130 to place fifth overall at the Middlebury Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Swiecki posted 2332 individual points on day one to set the stage for his school-record breaking performance on Saturday. On Friday, he recorded a time of 7.63 in the men's 60-meter dash and he also posted a distance of 6.12 in the men's long jump. He added a distance of 9.21m in the shot put and also cleared 1.78m in the high jump. On Saturday, he recorded a fourth-place finish in the hurdles with a time of 8.93, and he added a third-place finish in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.30m. He wrapped up the weekend with a fourth-place finish in the 1000m run (3:06.06).
 
Player of the Week – Stevens
Gabe Shankweiler, Graduate, Outside Hitter – Allentown, PA/Emmaus
 
Gabe Shankwiler led the No. 2 Stevens teams to a 3-0 week with wins over nationally ranked No. 7 Kean, No. 11 Marymount and Elms, which is among teams also receiving votes. Shankwiler totaled 34 kills on 63 attacks with 10 errors (.381 attack percentage) as Stevens swept Elms and Kean and defeated Marymount in four sets. Named to the Clash at Kean's All-Tournament Team, Shankweiler also collected four blocks, three aces, three assists and 14 digs.
 
Rookie of the Week – Elmira
Jose Malave, Freshman, Outside Hitter – San Juan, Puerto Rico/Academia Discipulos de Cristo
 
Jose Malave helped the Soaring Eagles win all four matches at the Elmira College Invitational as he led the team with 3.08 kills per set and 11 service aces, while finishing just one kill shy of the team lead (40) and notching 19 digs in the tournament. Malave opened the invite with six kills, four aces and three digs in a 3-0 victory over Keuka on Friday, and then proceeded to break the program record for attack percentage in the nightcap versus Thiel. In the straight-set victory, Malave floored 14 kills with just one error on 15 total tries, equaling an eye-popping rate of .867. On Saturday morning, Malave posted eight kills, three aces and two blocks in Elmira's 3-1 triumph against D'Youville. He closed the tournament with a 12-kill, 11-dig double-double with a season-high-tying four aces in a narrow 3-2 victory against Wells.
