Defending Champion Cortland Impresses During Day One of Empire 8 Women's Golf Championship

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. - SUNY Cortland posted a 331 as a team during Day One of the 2018 Empire 8 Women's Golf Championship, and holds a commanding lead heading into Championship Sunday. The Red Dragons were led on Saturday by junior Danielle Bambola, pictured, who registered a 2-over 74 to lead all golfers. The defending E8 champions will take a commanding 35-shot lead into Sunday's play.

Three different Cortland student-athletes are in the top six following Day One of this year's championship. Bambola's 74 is eight strokes better than the rest of the field, while her teammates Tiffany Schapira (84) and Kristin Scali (86) helped the Red Dragons open a commanding lead following Day One of play.

Suffolk (366) currently stands in second place, three strokes ahead of Johnson & Wales (369), which is currently in third.

Empire 8 Championship History
This weekend's event marks the tenth installment of the Empire 8's annual championship. SUNY Cortland won last year's championship, posting a team total of 682 last fall. The Dragons were led by Tiffany Schapira, pictured, who earned medalist honors following her two-day score of 164. The top five finishers were all Cortland student-athletes as the Dragons impressed on their way to the 2017 title.

Empire 8 All-Conference
The top five finishers will be named Empire 8 First Team selections, with the next five student-athletes earning Second Team accolades.
